sushi is interesting - the tastes and the textures are very fun - but i never feel like i've had a meal after going to a sushi restaurant. it's kinda like tapas, you get to taste stuff but you don't really satisfy your hunger.

lol

You're not eating enough. wink

I've come out with a clean but bloated feeling and have remained full all day after eating sushi.

i think if i ate enough sushi to make me full, i'd have to just change my name to willy and live in the sea where i could sift plankton through my baleen all the live long day.

The place you have to find is the "all you can eat sushi bar". I've stumbled across several where I'm at. Though, i've still to make it to one. They charge a flat price like 20 bucks, and then you get to pig out. woot!

It's hard 'cause I don't eat fish but I love the veggie stuff, and not everybody HAS interesting veggie stuff. So, I limit my own options.

But, as I said, I stuffed myself for $20. That's fine. I just need to find a place with specials like you're talking about so that my girlfriend can afford to go with me. smile

There's a place I go sometimes that has an "all you can eat" sushi... You order what you think you can eat off the menu, and they charge you $20 no matter what. Problem is, if you leave any pieces, when they take your plate, they add it all up to see what they can charge you a la carte for what's left. That's how they roll. But I can eat an ungodly amount of sushi, so, it's a great deal for me. All that for $20.
This one's for you.

I love the Spider roll, followed by the spicy tuna handroll, Unagi, Las Vegas roll, and hamachi. You can do this at home. Must purchase sea food from a market that sells sushi quality fish. Visited friends in Japan and it was make your own handroll at home. The rice is sticky rice with vinegar, and cooled (sushi rice)
Take seaweed sheets, add rice, add preferred seafood, avacado, cucumber, sprouts, sesamme seeds. etc. Ginger, wasabe, soy sauce on the side.

Isn't it true that the warmer you drink sake the worse quality it is? I'm not bitchin' cos we have sake here and we have to drink it warm. And we don't mind. Except we need a sake set so we're not drinking it out of our little juice glasses.

It's not served boiling nor cold. The Japanese have the temp down to a tenth of a degree. Warm is good.

When i go to sushi places i just have the Bento Box. Love it.

On New Year's day, the Bento box is extremely elaborate. New Year's day, is the only day of the year Japanese women have off. So everything is prepared in advance. It's unusual food you don't usually have access to. What you have must be a simpler version.

Try an "all you can eat" sushi lunch in Tucson. My sushi bar, for twenty dollars, keeps making whatever is on the special menu. For me it's cheaper to order what I want off the regular menu. The lunch special has handrolls, sushi, everything. (no sashimi, though) Too much food for me.

The first time! It was 16-17 years ago...at a little fashionista haunt in South Beach called Tony's. It was my very 1st date with a tall handsome photographer who would eventually become my husband. I was totally green, had never had sushi before and only went on the date because I had a crush on this beautiful man. I ate miso soup and seaweed the entire night because I was scared to try the sashimi plate! I didn't trust the idea of scarfing down a gigantic boat full of raw sashimi, but then he finally got me to try a roll, Californian I think. I remember liking it but not being able to eat it all because of girly date nervousness. I also teased him and told him anyone that would eat that much sashimi in one sitting could live to regret it: and you know, he sure enough did; he had to leave the next day for another assignment and barfed the entire flight from Miami to Paris!!!!! He eventually recovered, we eventually became an item, and I eventually came to looooove sashimi, mostly tuna or salmon! Rolls, I like simple tuna maki or cucumber, and i LIVE for TUNA TATAKI served with Ponzu sauce. I love other types to, but those are definite favorites!

Those ROCK. Or you have to find one of those places where they put individual servings on table that floats covered plates by you round robbin, and you just pick the plates you want eat until you're full. The plates are priced by color code so you can really control how much you want to spend as well as see what you'll be eating (and not waste, which is a big no no in Japanese dining)

No, we're in Seattle (which isn't the cheapest place on Earth, but it's not as bad as Japan). She likes sashimi (sp?). I think she had eel, tuna, scallops . . . but basically, all just really good fish, no rice rolls. Makes sense for it to cost more. shrug

i guess i'm not too worried about safety since i don't eat fish...of course, there's some knifework involved and they tell me i shouldn't use sharp objects if i can help it
