I had a totally different take. I thought all of the characters were really fleshed out and perfectly cast. the teenage boy was my fave -- i LOVED his character arc. His breakdown was the emotional highpoint for me. And I didn't find the self-hating gay man offensive either. I didn't read it as him being self-hating because he was gay, but because he got really fucked over in a couple of big life events.

I actually saw this as part of a staff screening, so it was a group of about 10 PG's (that's professional gays) who were not offended and actually quite delighted by the charm.

Aside: A friend of mine works at the studio where the bus is being stored. I'm supposed to go by and take a picture next to it!

Okay, the last part had me and the other 10 people in the audience on the floor laughing.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this movie. I can't believe you hated it so much! There was a little lull in the middle, but I was distracted anyway

This was the funniest movie I've seen in a long time. I absolutely LOVED it!

It was well put together, good editing, but I still don't like the characterizations. Grandpa was over the top. Maybe not my kind of humor, though it was entertaining. Seemed to have the Hollywood formula, feel-good ending dressed up as an independent film. I heard so many things about it, but yuck. Sorry.

It was cool. Not the best of the year, certainly, but a good film with strong performances. I loved Alan Arkin in this. And the little girl was cute.
