I believe that it was necessary for survival back in the day (and still is in some parts of the world) but to see it flaunted as an extravagant accessory is unnecessary to me. I like the look, so I opt for fake fur (it is cheaper also). I do own one piece of real fur, but it is an antique shawl from the 50's. I don't feel bad about having such an old piece, because it has historical value. I do enjoy leather, but I make sure that it is a by product of the food industry. It is less wasteful.

While I am against wearing fur, this statement is one of the most ridiculous things I have read on here.

Animals don't vote, drive, run for political office or produce reality shows... Doesn't mean they're not worthy of respect and humane treatment... But it does underscore the differences between humans and nonhumans...

We are superior. Whether we temper that superiority with grace or heartlessness, however, is another story altogether.

As opposed to them being differences that occur among species, you mean?

Ascribing equal weight to building a skyscraper and to building a nest in a tree?

I believe humans should be responsible for Earth and how we treat all of its inhabitants, human and otherwise.

But, I think people go a little overboard when they suggest humans and animals are the same or carry equal importance in the family of Creation...

nod Exactly...or HOW do those things make us superior. We can't fly like birds...or survive freezing cold tempuratures without artificial means unlike polar bears...

To me those things are much more "superior" than being able to vote. I guess it depends on how you measure success as a species.

Yes, it informs my opinion. Though, the Bible is full of instances where God used animals to help fulfill prophecy or even to keep His servants in line. (Jonah and the fish, Balaam and his donkey, etc.)

we are equal in the ability to feel pain. and inflicting pain on other sentient beings for the purpose of vanity, entertainment or other unnecessary pursuits can't possibly be a good thing.

but i think that's what Threadbare was saying, if i understand him correctly.

Take hunting, for example. I don't do it. Various men in my life do.

Do you all see a difference, though, between hunting for food and hunting solely for sport?

And, are you all vegetarians (those of you who oppose wearing fur, I mean)?

hunting for "sport" is frivolous. hunting for food is largely unnecessary.

and yes, i'm a vegan - no animal products at all. it's very easy to do.

Speaking of ethical considerations, I always have considered how the Bible shows the first animals being killed as a result of man's sin. Even the biblical model of the propitiation of sin required animal sacrifices until Christ's sacrificial death and resurrection.

I always thought that Superiority was a System devised by Man himself to justify his own actions.

Oh Look.....Them Coloured folk are inferior to us superior White folk.....Lets Enslave and opress them for the next millenium.....

Oh Look.....That race is Inferior to our superior race.....Lets wipe them off the face of the earth.....

Oh Look at that Cute Panda.....Lets shoot its inferior ass.....

Oh look.....We are superior to every living organism on this planet.....Lets abuse it until its all gone and our Superior ass becomes extinct because we in fact have never been superior.....Just ignorant..... lol

Yeah, being vegetarian and wearing fur are related, but different, issues. A person might be able to argue that they, personally, need to eat meat to feel well. Nobody in the United States NEEDS to wear fur. The aniamsl are raised and killed in nasty conditions just for the sake of vanity. I think it says a lot about you if that's ok with you, and I have zero patience for it. Makes me really angry.

If you must wear i, at the very least, buy it used. Then the money is going to the consignment store or whatever, and not to the inhumane treatment of more animals.

Just to play devil's advocate, you've never lived through a Minnesota winter... I'm not saying I agree with purchasing fur and that there aren't alternatives, but I don't think you can make a warmer coat, period. I see the attraction. 5 layers of clothing and multiple 'coats', or your normal outfit and one coat.

I think some vintage fur coats are absolutely gorgeous. I think the industry is appalling, but I still adore the look.

I accidentally purchased a rabbit fur hat a few years ago. Had I known it was real rabbit fur, I wouldn't have bought it. I mean, it's pink and was only about $20, I didn't even bother to check the tag. A few days after I had it home someone asled me if it was or not and we looked at the tag and discovered it is. sad
It's still a really, really, cute hat, though. redface I and I could never let it go to waste.

I agree, I think it shows a lack of perspective of the relationship between animals and humans. At its best there should be a respect for animals and an understanding of their nature, to view them for what they are and to be treated with kindness. Why judge them with the same kind of issues reserved for human relationships? It's like that dressing your dog in clothes bullshit, he's your dog, not something to take out all your emotional baggage on. They should not have their habitats destroyed, to live alongside them and understand them and let them be animals. Dont deny them their true nature, THAT to me is cruel.

I don't understand the animal as an equal thing but I do not visit zoos or circuses because I think the way they treat animals so we can be entertained is cruel. Maybe when I see us as humans repsecting each other, then maybe I can move on to respect animals.
