And the little girl was cute. what do you think is the best of the year? snoop dogg wasn't in anything in 2006, was he? I loved Superman. Loved! But you'd have to remind me what else has come out this year.

I thought the characters were hoaky and stereotyped. Especially the non-speaking teenager and the suicidal Proustian gay man. This wrist-cutting self-hating gay man seemed especially offensive to me. (but don't tell madartista) I hear you, but I thought Steve Carell's character was really sympathetic and believable. I felt like they treated it as a person with a broken heart because their beloved loves another person; it just happened to be all men involved. They even treated it that way at the dinner table when he tells the little girl. I loved this movie. The ending was fucking ROCK! I laughed until I literally cried. It was such a release after the buildup of tension. Fantastic. I walked out of the theater feeling great. The Normal Whores Club

Alan Arkin was all KINDS of awesome! His character's entrance was CLASSIC. You're aware that Grandpa and his granddaughter are downstairs practicing her beauty pageant routine. Totally cute and lily, right? Then Grandpa comes upstairs: "Chicken? Again with the GODDAMN FUCKING CHICKEN???" It was beautiful. The Normal Whores Club

For me, it was the first time in literally years that I knew within 10 minutes that I would love the entire movie and was not disappointed. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

Well, because I don't like one film that makes me have no taste? The film was shown at Sundance which has gotten more mainstream and mundane lately. By the way, I hate Tom Hanks and I work in the programming department for the San Francisco International Film Festival putting together programs, one of the most respected film festivals in the world.

A few of the more promising movies from 2006 in my opinion:
Encounter Point (Israeli/Candadian/Palestinian) Eden (German) Lili et Le Baobab (French) Beyond the Call Wide Awake by the fabulous Alan Berliner How Little We Know of Our Neighbors Road To Guantanamo The Shutka Book of Records (Macedonia) Metal: A Headbanger's Journey Iraq In Fragments Heart of the Game Half Nelson Sherrybaby All heads and shoulders above Little Miss Sunshine in my opinion I see I'm alone in this though

i understand why someone whose tastes run to the left of the left of the mainstream would find 'little miss sunshine' a bit asthetically offensive. i get it. but really, if this is the future of the indie-ization of mainstream movies, i say bring it on. i thought the characters were well thought-out and interesting, i enjoyed the story, i liked that it was a film about a lower-middle class family and that they were realistically depicted as such, and dammit, i laughed a lot. the big "reveal" at the end could have been a lot funnier if they hadn't decided to turn it into a heartwarming family feel-good moment, but in its own sickeningly saccharine way, it didn't feel out of place to me...just a little over-indulgent. the film reminds me of movies from the '70s, where poor families who lived in the middle of nowhere were made sexy and cool. i'd love to see that come back. maybe teri garr will have a career again.

Yes! The dinner scene at the beginning was so realistic it was almost uncomfortable to watch in places. I began to feel almost voyeuristic and nearly wanted to look away. The mom's normal, slightly-drab-but-still-cute hair and clothes, the mismatched cups, the paper plates, the way she scrambled around with the bottle of Sprite...you could feel her earnest nervousness in wanting to make this just a normal family dinner using what she had to work with. I'll freely admit that 90% of the movies I've watched have been mainstream films. Watching "Little Miss Sunshine" made me realize that I'm sick of looking at movies in which everyone is perfectly airbrushed, has a home out of a high-end catalog, drives a pristine car and never wants for anything or gets a runny nose. yeah, this is a good assessment and it's all relative. My tastes run far to the left (though maybe not as left as sextonseven ) To be fair, I did enjoy the moment when the pedophile stands up and shouts YEAH at the end.
