I'm gonna try an experimental teaching lesson this week... We're reading poems by wordsworth, Ben Jonson, Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Emily Dickinson, Blake, Thoureau, Wordworth, and a couple other cats in my reading recovery class. My kids think its boring,,, but its required by the state. This weekend I had one of my D.J. buddies hook up a bunch of instrumentals to popular rap/hip hop songs such as Money Meker, snap yo fingers, chain hang low, go D.J., Hey Ya, Promiscuous, I got 5 on it, Its Going down, and a couple of other tracks of songs that are popular with the kids today.. I worked out some of the poems with some of these tracks and even recorded one so what I'm going to do is have the kids get in groups of 4 (I have 20 students on my case load) and give them two poems each. The kids have to work in groups of 4 on an oral presentation. They get to 2 beats per group and will rehearse. On thursday they will make a presentation,, and on Friday I'm gonna bring my laptop in and have them record and give them each a C.D. I hope it gets them to appreciate poetry.. What do ya'll thing of my idea? [Edited 9/24/06 9:18am] Carpenters bend wood, fletchers bend arrows, wise men fashion themselves.

That sounds like an excellent idea. As a language-teacher, I would be glad to know how it went ! Good luck.

I'm disappointed.
I thought by experimental you meant using monkeys to teach the class or only using telepathy.

I think it's really weird how that "Promiscuous" song is OK to play to kids.
I wouldn't want my kid listening to that or the Money Maker song in school. Perhaps you should inform the parents of your song selections. [Edited 9/24/06 15:12pm] I AM BEATLOAF
