Harlem Baby Dies After Falling In Vomit

By Associated Press
Fri Sep 22, 0:05 AM

NEW YORK - A 3-month-old infant fell off a bed into a bucket of her teenage mother's vomit and died, said police, who charged the woman with negligent homicide on Thursday.

Savarin Dejesus, 18, had left the child with a baby sitter at an East Harlem group home where she lived to go out partying Sept. 15, police said.

When she returned, Dejesus vomited in the bucket next to the bed where she fell asleep with her daughter, Niah Ford, in her arms, police said.

The infant later tumbled into the bucket and apparently drowned, police said. Dejesus didn't discover what had happened to her baby until the next afternoon.

The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Dejesus also was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. She was in police custody late Thursday.

A woman who answered the telephone at Dejesus' group home, the Fox House, declined to comment on the baby's death.

Kids shouldn't be parents at eighteen either.

It is a horrible freak accident. And I think it sucks that it's taken as an opportunity to paint the mother as a drunken, irresponsible "teen mother."

How do they know she was out drinking? I had my first child at 18. I've also gotten sick and had to throw up. This could have happened to nearly anyone.

Excellent point. It's unfortunate that so many are though.

I overheard a group of teenagers on the train the other day. One guy about 17 said he was glad his girlfriend had a miscarriage because he wasn't ready to be a father. The bastard should keep his dick in his pants and both males and females should be using birth control.

I hear conversations like that riding the subway too - nothing but hot ghetto mess. It gets depressing hearing how ignorant some of these young folks are. It's like they've never heard of safe sex. Do they think STDs are a thing of the past?

I know..

But sometimes we need to count our blessings.

This could've happen to anyone. Regardless of what age.

I use to be extremely careful when my kids were babies.

Use to check their pulse to make sure

that they were still breathing when they were asleep. lol

Really...I did

Where was the father? He should have been providing for them, so they didn't have to live in a group home. I get pissed off when I read stuff like this. Some of these young men need to wake the f--- up and start acting like real men. You made the baby, so do whatever you have to do and make sure your family's taken care of.

I read another article that said she had been drinking, then vomitted in the bucket before passing out while holding the baby's legs. She woke up 10 hours later to find the baby in the bucket. But, like you were saying, this could have happened to any one, of any age too. I know some teen moms who are very responsible. This is just a tragedy all around.

She went to sleep holding the baby in her arms.

Why would she do this KNOWING she was drunk AND on the verge of puking at any time during the night?

So u think some scumbag lawyer will try to say that the "home" was responsible in some bizarre way?

Yeah, they're trying to find out if the house had provided a crib for her to use. Always looking for someone to blame...

Stymie

People really shouldn't paint people with such broad brushes. I was a teen mom at 18, had a job and a place to stay. While she sounds like this wasn't for her, let's not forget that there are way more moms and dads over 18 that suck as parents.
