I think everyone was pretty much making fun of the girls posted here.
But I could have been misreading. I'm pretty dumb too. wink

Barely anyone really defended this girl. Most people just made fun of her.

If the thread showed a picture of a fat person asking the same question most people in here would go apeshit in anger, and I seriously doubt that anyone would be making fun of her.

If you are going to make fun of someone for being too skinny or possibly having an eating disorder, you should also have no problem making fun of someone for being too fat and also possibly having an eating disorder.

I wonder how many of you would be all so defensive if these were photo's of Obese women?

Or is it ok to pick on "Fat Folk"?

Just sayin' confused

I didn't really notice anyone being defensive.

I wasn't defending skinnyness, I was defending a disease. A very serious disease that KILLS people.
Obesity kills people too, just like Cancer, and Aids. I would defend those things if people made fun of them as well.
I just defend eating disorders a bit more, because I don't really understand how so many people tend to find them so humerous. biggrin

But, some of these women who are posted (Nicole Ritchie, Posh) have admitted to having eating disorders and you just said that you think they look great they obviously are extremely sick looking. confuse

You act like you're concerned for people who have a deadly disease, but then you say how beautiful they look when they're that thin. hmm

i think that IS what perpetuates eating disorders - the fact that, up to a very dire level, many people still find extreme thinness attractive and inadvertently encourage that image. i don't think it's done with any malintent, but with more and more very young children trying to emulate this, we need to be extra vigilent to teach our children about health and well-being over looks.

I agree. I actually used to think like this, because as dancer, you just do. I used to think there was no such thing as too thin. nod For a past few years though, my thinking changed for some reason. Not sure why though. hmmm

Well, actually, there are a couple of pics of obese men and women that get posted here relatively frequently as jokes (one is a naked, morbidly obese guy in front of his computer and the other is a morbidly obese woman in lingerie). Usually, it's been to imply that an orger looks like that behind his/her computer.

I think that because it's an extreme--not someone just overweight or chubby--no one goes "apeshit" defending those in the pictures. Similarly, I think the reason there are jokes about this particular woman is because she's the opposite extreme--again, an EXTREME.

Either extreme tends to draw nasty comments and jokes, I've noticed.

I've never seen anyone post pics like that. I guess I missed those.

In some cases that perpetuates eating disorders. But a lot of eating disorders actually have nothing to do (in the begining) with body image, so much. But you're rite. We do need to be careful with our children in that aspect.

I've seen it in several threads. Not that they were responding to posted pictures, just to people's attitudes towards people who were obese.

I recall people defending being somewhat overweight, of how there are reasons other than laziness and overeating involved in being overweight--NOT morbidly obese, though, they still exercised and were active.

I hear you, though--there should be thoughtfullness on both sides. Perhaps it's still lopsided because the ultra skinny can still be portrayed as beautiful by the media and still be considered sexually attractive vs. how a morbidly obese person is portrayed ("lazy", "no will-power", "disgusting"). shrug

They are actually posted quite frequently...and even the context in which the photos are taken is telling of the difference...this excruciatingly thin model is doing just that...modeling...and it looks like she's on a stage of somekind...presumably in a fashion show. They other photos ALT mentioned (which have been posted several times...including one of an overweight boy laughing) are not pics of obese people on a catwalk modeling high fashions...do you know why? Because they can't...it's not accepted.
It isn't nice to make fun of either extreme...but, you can't deny that one is accepted and considered "sexy" in many circles while the other isn't.

i'm not sure it's that black or white. it's often a combination of both, and the one thing we do control is our reaction to somebody with an eating disorder, as well as how we interpret eating disorders to our kids.

Absolutely, I agree, as far as the kids are concerned. We need to be extremley careful of how we talk about body images.
I'm saying for those who have eating disorders.
It's like cancer or alcoholism. They never REALLY go away. You can go into remission for a little while. But when you least expect it, they come back to bite you in the ass. And someone saying, Oh you look great the way you are, isn't gonna make a difference.
