And the media play their part by hyping the women who manage to get down to rail-thin weights.
Go to any magazine stand, and you'll see countless mags that rave about how a post-partum starlet has "gotten rid of the weight." Days ago, I saw one such mag raving about Angelina Jolie's recent weight loss. "Learn how they did it!" usually is the headline. The implications are clear: These actresses and singers are to be praised for becoming thin, and the readers are expected to WANT to follow suit. Combine this with the magazines that feature articles such as "101 Ways to Please Him in Bed!" and you're well on your way to Stepfordville.

But, there are a lot of articles (probably more) that celebrate non-pregnancy weight loss. And, likewise, more than the ones that criticize the too-thin starlets, from more media outlets.

But there are more overweight people than underweight people in this country at least. I think that's why people used feel free to tell me I was too thin & looked emaciated (I was always healthy) not realizing it was just as insulting as saying someone needs to lose twenty pounds. Many people wish they had to gain weight. Eating disorders are no joke, but generally weight loss is a good thing. That particular model, however, looks like she needs some intervention. My Legacy

Rhondab said: LleeLlee said: She could be in the peak of health for all we know, ( but from this picture it appears that she isn't lol ) anyhow, regarding unhealthy skinny women the world and it's wife knows that being extremely thin is not something young women should aspire to as it isn't a healthy condition to be in (unless you are naturally thin) and attitudes are changing. Skinny celebrities are constantly vilified in the press for being too thin. A prime example is Nicole Richie. Anyone who thinks that being this thin is flaunted by the media as an acceptable weight is wrong. Just in that statement alone, I disagree. The media does flaunt being thin as the STANDARD we should all be. Now when it gets to the unnatural looking stuff like Nicole, then you'll hear the criticism. I just liked to hear more about being HEALTHLY for height and body type. I'm 5'8" with a larger frame (skeletal frame) The smallest I've been was 135 and my family thought I was sick. I can't be that little BUT the media throws numbers out there like if I said I was a size 12, that's fat and yet I'm really damn fly at a 12. The media plays a part. By "this thin" I meant the woman in the picture, I should have made that more clear. The media do promote being thin as an ideal but I dont think they encourage being stick insect thin & gaunt. Stick thin people are criticised in the press for being bad role models. I was taking issue with the "real" woman tag and saying that thin women are not real women. 12 is NOT fat at all. lol.
