Waiters Keeping Watch List On Bad Tippers

Bad tippers should be aware the next time they stiff a server on a tip -- waiters are keeping a list.

In some states, restaurant servers only make $2 or $3 an hour, depending on tips to make a living, NBC5 reported on Wednesday.
Some waiters say they'll confront customers who stiff them on the check. Others are creating Web sites that list bad tippers.

Actress Sandra Bernhard is listed on one Web site. She reportedly failed to tip on a $120 complimentary dinner.

confused Dang!!!

Well, I always try to tip 15%, but that's based on service. I might slide it down to 10% for mediocre service, and I'm not too object to not leaving a tip if the service sucks....
This one's for you.

i love the tippers hall of shame idea! i've always wanted to start a web site listing toxic job environments, so that when someone's looking for a new job, they'll know where to steer clear of. information is power!

For sure!

But maybe I like it so much as I pride myself on being a regularly good tipper. lol

If the service as bad enough that I don't want to leave a tip or tip really, really poorly, I talk to the manager to tell them why, so they know it was for a reason. I stopped going to one of my fave restaurants for over a year because of bad service once.

I wouldn't eat in a place which didn't have service included in the prices. It's tantamount to slavery.

Yep, the first thing a server does when they get screwed out of a tip is go complain to the other servers what just happened, and point you out to them.

yup. when i was a waiter we had "regulars" who were bad tippers, and we'd always try to find reasons why we wouldn't have to wait on them. they were always lowest on the priority list when it was busy.

They need to change the wages for waiters there, imo
It's bs that tipping is considered obligatory

The problem with this is anyone can put anyone on the list for ANY reason. I read recently where someone was suing a waiter for libel for this very reason

The chicken or the egg? Are they not good tippers because of the bad service?
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

if you've ever been a waiter, then you know you can give kickass service and still get a lousy tip. or worse, you'll get a "verbal tip" ("oh, you were such a good waiter, and so funny and cute!") and a coupla dimes and some pocket lint is all you get for it.

look, the bottom line is this:

a lot of people think the concept of tipping is ridiculous. well, okay. that's a valid opinion. but it exists, so either try to start some grassroots campaign to ban tipping or else shut up and deal with it.

until an alternative to tipping is put into practice, it's a part of dining out, at least in america. tipping is how waiters, bartenders, barbacks, bussers, etc., make a living. when they do their job well and you don't tip them well, you're wasting their time and putting a dent in their livelihood.

waiters don't do what they do because they "owe" you something. it's 50/50. they take care of you and you take care of them. PERIOD.

if you can't afford to tip, or if you think tipping is a waste of your money, here's an idea: DON'T GO OUT. you don't have to tip your damn oven. plus, seriously, the food you cook yourself will most likely be cheaper and healthier than what you'd get in a restaurant. PLUS, you don't have to worry about people spitting in your food because everyone knows you're such a damn cheapskate! biggrin

and i put my money where my mouth is - if i don't feel like i have the money to leave a decent tip, i stay home and i cook. and i've gotten into the habit of cooking, and i quite enjoy what i make. and YES, it SAVES MONEY. for the price of one night out at a restaurant, i could probably buy ingredients for three nights' dinners at home.

so if tipping really bugs you THAT MUCH, stay at home. learn to cook. have people over for dinner. wow them with your culinary skills. it'll end up being easier on everyone's karma in the long run.

Agreed. I can't stand that either - or when people are rude to anyone who works in any sector of the service industry. It's just embarrassing to be around. disbelief People had manners once upon a time. nod

whew!

I was gonna say, my tip for cabbies is often a direct reflection of the drunken antics in the car. The drunker and sillier we are, the larger the tip.

no, i'm talking more about people being belligerent, antagonistic, offensive, racist, etc., when dealing with cabbies. drunken sillies are merely a minor occupational hazard, i think. something to keep the cabbies awake in the wee hours. lol
