Hey, urban apartment dwellers. . . question. . .

How often do your windows get washed?

I have lived on the top (third) floor of my apartment building for a year. The windows haven't been washed since I've been here, and they were already quite dirty when I moved in. My manager seems utterly unconcerned, and I'm not sure how to contact the property management company. But I'm very annoyed. There is absolutely no safe way for me to do it myself. My view is really nice in the winter, and I want to be able to enjoy it with the windows closed (WINTER!!!), dammit.

What I'm wondering is, is this normal, or just my ghetto-ass building?

Anx

i wouldn't even DREAM of asking my building management to wash the outsides of my windows. lol

unless you can figure out a creative way to do it yourself, you're most likely out of luck.

you'ld have to check your lease, Hereto...it might read that the lessee is responsible for maintaining the apartment, which can be construed to mean/include the windows. If your building has a maintenance guy, you might be able to slip him/her a couple of bucks to do it.

I've lived in my apartment for over ten years now. The windows NEVER got washed. But the problem was solved when the landlords simply replaced all the windows in the building a few years ago.

Did I mention that my parents own the building? If anybody's windows would have gotten washed, it would have been mine, right?

Queens actually. Not quite as urban as Manhattan, but I still felt that I could answer the question. smile

It's weird, 'cause I don't remember this being a problem with my previous apartments. confuse I guess I just never had any desire to be able to see out of them before.

To the best of my knowledge, they've done it once since I moved in (July 2005). The managers are pretty good about giving us written advance notice about stuff like that.

I'm not sure how to contact the property management company.

Have you looked through your lease? Often the property management company is named as the agent of the owner(s). Also, if you have to mail your rent checks somewhere, or if the lease provides that you can pay your rent at some offsite location, that's probably their office.

When I lived a few blocks away from a not-so-nice part of Indianapolis, it seemed as if somebody in our building would have his or her car window smashed about once per month. Never happened to me, though... I think the culprits were crackheads looking for something to pawn or sell, and I never left anything inside my car (except a cheap ballpoint pen and a small pad of paper).

i've lived in my apartment for 5 years now, and they've never been washed. i suppose the realty company expects us to wash our own raggedy-assed windows.

...now that i think of it...i've lived in apartments for pretty much my whole life, and the caretakers never washed the windows in any of 'em. the most the realty company has done is replaced all the windows on one side of the building that i currently live in. the ones on my side have yet to be replaced.

slow bastids. i sure as fuck have been paying enough to keep this place from falling apart, why can't they hook a sista up with some windows that don't let cold drafts n'rain through? hrmph
