I share company with relatively famous people (in Australia at least) every week, and it branches out to people who are much more famous from there. My singing teacher's husband wrote (or co-wrote and produced - I'm not certain) the theme tune to The Goodies (he's kinda embarrassed about that actually) and as a couple they have worked with and/or met Cat Stevens, James Brown, Monty Python and more (that's all she's mentioned to me so far, but I know there are many other notables). It's good... my network as a musician is starting to open up the more I see these people, it feels like.

Wow. Some of you have quite the list!
I've met a few Canadian celebs (most cases I was just introduced, said "hi" and other than that and just being in the same room, that was about it). I also met and hung out with a CBC tv personality/musician who dated a close friend of mine for a while. I have met a number of international artists and djs through my brother. I think that's pretty cool. Prince called me up on stage when I was 19, but I turned him down. That's the closest I've come to meeting a true superstar.

It just felt weird. As much as I was sooooo into him and was very excited to see him (it was my first time), my immediate reaction was to say "no". Even after a few attempts to get me to come up I refused. The girl beside me went up instead and she never returned.

One of my classmates had some connections to the Indiana Republican Party, and she gave me an invitation to a political rally where he gave a speech. (Turns out I didn't actually need the invitation -- they later announced the event to the public.) They held the rally in a hangar at the airport, and due to an odd setup, I was toward the back of the crowd, but against the ropeline. After his speech, he came down off the stage to work the ropeline. I don't remember what I said to him, but he shook my hand, put his hand on my shoulder, and said, "Thank you for coming out." (For the record, I didn't vote for him.) In retrospect, it's somewhat disturbing to have met the guy who's probably done more than any other one person to screw up the world in the 21st century. * * * I've had other interesting experiences at political rallies. The 1996 Dole campaign wanted to put me in a group of people behind him on stage during a speech. (I politely declined.) I guess they were trying to assemble a "diverse" collection of people, because I can't think of any other reason they'd want someone with long purple-ish hair and piercings as part of a backdrop for the potential next President of the United States. Yeah, I don't shake hands with political folks, I refused to shake with a Senator a few days ago when he came to our office. There were was only three of us in there, so it was hard not to see me refuse to put out my hand. Needless to say my boss gave me a long speech on just humoring them and the cameras.
