Emmitt Smith- I met him in the mall and got his autograph
I think he was trying to get my attention. We were in the Music Store. He walked in front of me,behind me,then he grazed my right shoulder I stopped him and asked him if he was Emmitt Smith. He whispered yes and I asked for his autograph. "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

the most excruciating brush with fame i had was when laurie anderson sat next to me at a karen finley performance.
she came in right as the lights went down and i tried SO HARD through the whole show not to get all fammed out and screech "OMIGOD LAURIE I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU" in the middle of the performance. i was very good, and i told myself i'd fam out after the show if i behaved during it. laurie left right before the curtain call, so i didn't get to fam out. coincidentally, karen finley sat next to me at a different light bookstore reading not long after, and, learning my lesson, i politely went into fammy fam mode with her before the reading. she was very sweet.

i'm remembering my other wacky NYC famous people stories (it's a great place for 'em):
going to a friend's house for an informal dinner party of about 4 guests, and discovering one of the guests was ed koch. standing in line behind lauren hutton at a deli and my roommate realizing she'd forgotten her purse at the counter, and us running down the street after her yelling "MISS HUTTON! MISS HUTTON! YOUR PURSE!!!" accidentally belly-flopping jon stewart while attempting to cross Avenue A during a crowded friday night. being drunk and seeing diamanda galas on the street and screaming "I LOVE YOU!" and diamanda marching right up to me and kissing me on the mouth. there've been a couple of brushes with fame since i left nyc, but nothing quite as quirky or random.

"we keep our victims ready" is an incredible peice. by the time i knew who she was and saw her, she was way tame. it kinda turned me off from wanting to see her again. ooh, k&h - forgot to tell you about the show. it was okay. not as good as "would die for you" we had to go to a mantinee, unfortunately, because of 4 very different work schedules. only time we could go as a 4some was saturday afternoon. we were the only reasonably young ones in the whole place and were 5th row back, so she played most of the show right to us. we laughed our asses off. there were a few other hard laughers, but mostly it was old people having no idea what they were seeing. i am sure it affected the performance some. it was really funny... while smoking before goign in, we witnessed an old woman realizing for the first time kiki is played by a man while reading the giant review outside the theatre. she totally weirded out and was calling her freinds. "yes, a man! i swear! it says "justin"! no really!" Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

My friends & I hung out with Sheila E's brother, Juan, and some other band members at a mall in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was touring with MC Hammer, TLC & Boyz II Men on the 2 Legit Tour. We got invited to the hotel afterparty but we were all under 18 and the cops wouldn't let us in. (Probably a good thing in retrospect.)
I got Eldridge Cleaver's autograph in my copy of Soul on Ice when he and Bobby Seale spoke at my college. Roger Guenveur Smith (from several Spike Lee joints) did a program at the MCA (where I worked) and pretty much hit on every girl that worked there during the week leading up to his performance. Famous artists: Yinka Shonibare--I got to interview him as part of my job. My favorite celebrity interaction to date. He is SO nice and I love his work. William Kentridge--shook his hand & told him I was writing my Master's Thesis on one of his works. He didn't seem to care so much. Christo & Jeanne-Claude shared an elevator with Sol LeWitt when he was installing his show at the MCA Chicago Took classes from: Okwui Enwezor(he curated Documenta 11) Rosalind Krauss(very influential art historian in terms of post-modern theory) Seen at various museums where I've worked: Julianne Moore Mick Jagger Julia Roberts Tom Hanks Robin Givens Barbara Bush (the daughter not the former First Lady) Martha Stewart Lou Reed Tom Brokaw Paul Pfeiffer John Currin Andreas Gursky The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

So I net him as someone's dad, and I didn't ever ask him about music, though I would have liked to. This was in the 80's when Roy was recording with Elvis Costello, Bono & the Wilburys, and I'm a musician. You can imagine how hard it was to restrain myself. He had a guitar sitting on the couch in the living room, and my friend picked it up and pretended to rock out. Roy Jr. says "That's a $50,000 guitar." My friend kissed it and layed it back down carefully. [Edited 9/12/06 13:18pm] That's a cool story! Roy Jr. had a cool Bono story. Bono worked on Roy Orbison's last album, and he came to their house to meet for the first time. The Orbisons lived on the side of a mountain overlooking Malibu and the ocean--an amazing view. Bono came in the front door and the first thing you see when you walk in is the incredible view all across the back of the house though windows & sliding glass doors. In awe he walks towards it and slams into the sliding glass doors, knocking himself on his ass! My Legacy

George W. Bush. Where'd you meet him? During his 2000 presidential campaign, he came to Indianapolis, where I was living and attending law school. One of my classmates had some connections to the Indiana Republican Party, and she gave me an invitation to a political rally where he gave a speech. (Turns out I didn't actually need the invitation -- they later announced the event to the public.) They held the rally in a hangar at the airport, and due to an odd setup, I was toward the back of the crowd, but against the ropeline. After his speech, he came down off the stage to work the ropeline. I don't remember what I said to him, but he shook my hand, put his hand on my shoulder, and said, "Thank you for coming out." (For the record, I didn't vote for him.) In retrospect, it's somewhat disturbing to have met the guy who's probably done more than any other one person to screw up the world in the 21st century. * * * I've had other interesting experiences at political rallies. The 1996 Dole campaign wanted to put me in a group of people behind him on stage during a speech. (I politely declined.) I guess they were trying to assemble a "diverse" collection of people, because I can't think of any other reason they'd want someone with long purple-ish hair and piercings as part of a backdrop for the potential next President of the United States.
