I almost got busted by a truancy officer...LOL

this is just so weird to me--i remember when i was a teenager, everybody thought that i looked older than i actually was. nowadays, people mistake me for being younger than i actually am. dunno what it is, but anyway: earlier today i was standing outside waiting for the bus downtown. all the sudden this police car pulled up and parked in the bike lane right across from the bus shelter i was at. there were 4 other people waiting for the bus along with me, and a couple of 'em were school-age.

the cop rolled down his window and was all like "hey, come here!" at first i figured he was wanting to talk to one of the kids nearby me...i couldn't really tell who he was looking at at first because he was wearing sunglasses (it's cloudy in mpls today...th' fuck you need glasses for?! whofarted). then he waved "c'mere" again. i looked around, then i pointed to myself and go "who, me?" the cop's all like "yeah, you"...eek so i walked over to the police car. why on earth would the cops want me, i have no idea. eek

i go over to the car and the cop asked me, "why aren't you in school?" the cop was on truancy patrol, i guess...i was like "what?" for a second--then i realized that maybe the cop thought that i look like a teenager. i throw a lotta people off all the time because of how young i look. i told 'im "i don't have to go to school anymore, i graduated 7 years ago!" dude was all apologetic and totally nice to me and sent me on my way (i almost thought of asking 'im if he wanted to see my drivers' license so he can make sure, but i didn't need to)...then he talked to the teens who were standing behind me.

guess i'm lucky for 2 things:

1) the police officer wasn't one of the assholish ones
2) that i don't have to go to school anymore...shit, even if i was, i wouldn't be out there in plain view of the po-pos and waiting for the fuckin bus while skipping school.

when i was in vegas, everyone thought i was a hooker, especially the hookers, who would approach me, bum a cigarette and then try and talk shop. it was so freaking weird.

but then, that was when i lost a lot of weight, and partially out of rewad, and part necessity, i bought a whole new wardrobe. and all of it was tight and clingy and showed off my hot body.

so, i guess i should have seen that coming

I would have broke down crying and said, "I WANTED to go to university, but I just wasted my life away partying and sleeping until 3 p.m. and NOW look at my life! I'm such a failure and not a day goes by that I don't regret not continuing my education! Thanks. Thanks a LOT for reminding me of what could have been!" bawl fit

Hell, I WISH I'd get the opportunity to do that, but unfortunately I don't get mistaken for a high school student anymore. pout

The exact same thing happened to my dad when he was working on his Ph.D. He would have been somewhere between 21 and 26 at the time. A truant officer stopped him, and it went something like this:

Cop: "Why aren't you in school?"

Dad: "Because I'm a graduate student."

The cop got really embarassed, and didn't ask to see proof of age or a university ID.

* * *

A somewhat similar incident happened when my mom, her parents, her brother Marc, and my dad went out to dinner. It was Marc's 21st birthday, and he was very much looking forward to ordering a drink, being asked for his ID, and proudly showing it to the waitress. But the waitess didn't ask for Marc's ID -- instead, she carded my dad, who was a few years older.

(BTW, a waitress once told me that if any one person at a table needs to be carded, it's considered professional to ask everyone who's ordering an adult beverage for ID.)

In the past few months, I've had people guess my age at anywhere from 18 to 36. (Hmmm... I didn't realize until now that 36 is 18 doubled.) The interesting thing is, almost nobody can guess it correctly... they're usually too low, occasionally too high, but almost never get it right (currently 28).

Last year I had to get a series of rabies vaccines for vet school and every time I went I had to check in with the receptionist.

Well this one day I went to check in and the receptionist was all nasty to me and barked, "Where are your parents?!?"

I said, "I'm 24! My parents are at home!"

And then she was all nice to me. It's amazing how nice people are once they find out you're over 18.
