Anna Nicole Smith's adult son dies

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The 20-year-old son of Anna Nicole Smith died suddenly in the Bahamas on Sunday, three days after the former Playboy Playmate gave birth to a girl, Smith's attorney said.

A statement from Howard K. Stern, Anna Nicole Smith's attorney, did not provide any details of Daniel Smith's death, and he declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.



"We have yet to learn the cause of death but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor," Stern said in the statement. "Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being."

Daniel Smith was in the Caribbean nation where his mother, 38, gave birth to a healthy girl on Thursday, Stern said.

He appeared in "The Anna Nicole Show," a reality TV series that aired on the E! cable channel.

Since being named Playboy's Playmate of the Year in 1993, the former Vicki Lynn Hogan from Mexia, Texas, has never been far from the public spotlight. In 1994, she married wheelchair-bound oil tycoon J. Marshall Howard, 89, after meeting him at a strip club.

His death, after 14 months of marriage, triggered a legal battle over his estate between Smith and his son, E. Pierce Marshall. Earlier this year, she won a U.S. Supreme Court decision giving her another chance to collect millions of dollars. Pierce Marshall died in June.

Smith has not said who fathered her second child.

that's very sad. he was a cute kid, and it seemed that he really didn't want any part of his mother's circus sideshow life. i find it odd that cause of death wasn't mentioned. i can't really say that this is surprising news, though.

I heard this driving in this morning, my first thought was how sad but then I was like that's really messed up him dying three days after his little sister was born...

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) - The 20-year-old son of Anna Nicole Smith has been found dead in the Bahamas, where the former reality TV star and Playboy playmate gave birth to a girl days earlier.

Authorities had not determined what caused the death of Daniel Smith, whose body was found Sunday morning, said Robin Bonnema, a spokeswoman for Trimspa, the diet products company that has been endorsed by Nicole Smith. Bonnema had no other details, and calls to Nicole Smith's lawyer, Howard Stern of Santa Monica, Calif., were not immediately returned.

A statement on Nicole Smith's website said her son died suddenly.

"We have yet to learn the cause of death but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor," the statement said. "Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being."

Walter Evans, a spokesman for the Royal Bahamian Police Force, would say only that the son of an undisclosed celebrity had been found in a room of the private Doctor's Hospital in Nassau.

Anna Nicole Smith, 38, gave birth to a healthy six pound, nine ounce girl at the hospital on Thursday, her website said.

Her son had travelled to the Caribbean country "to share in the joy of his baby sister," the statement said. "Please do not make any press inquiries at this time so that Anna Nicole can grieve in peace."

Smith married Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II in 1994, when she was 26 and he was 89. He died the following year. Since then, she has feuded with Marshall's son, Pierce Marshall, over her entitlement to the tycoon's estate. Pierce Marshall died in July at age 67.

Bonnema said she did not know the name of Daniel Smith's father or that of the baby.

Oh my God. How awful Say what you will about Anna Nicole's circus. You could tell she really loved her son. She might not have been the perfect poster mother but hopefully that kid felt the love she had for him

Celebrity in hospital tragedy

A joyous occasion turned tragic for American celebrity, Anna Nicole Smith, when her 20-year-old son died yesterday while visiting his mother and newborn sister in their hospital room in The Bahamas.

Daniel Smith, son of the model and actress, reportedly suffered a "massive heart attack" on the maternity ward in Doctors Hospital, sources revealed. Police officials were tight-lipped about the incident and would not confirm nor deny the identity of the deceased.

However, Police Press Liaison Officer, Inspector Walter Evans, did verify that a California resident visiting a patient in The Bahamas, collapsed and died while on the maternity ward of the private hospital.

"This morning a Caucasian male was discovered sometime after 9 a.m.," said Insp. Evans. "The cause of death has not been determined and an autopsy has to be performed. Once we would have [carried out] an autopsy, [this] would confirm the exact cause of death."

The press officer said an official investigation has been launched, as The Royal Bahamas Police Force deems the death an interesting one.

An inside source revealed the patient was indeed reality show star, Anna Nicole Smith, 38, and that she had been on the maternity ward of the hospital since Tuesday. The source added that she gave birth to a baby girl, while officials confirmed that the patient's son flew into the country Saturday and was visiting his mother when he became ill.

According to the source, Daniel collapsed and died. The source added that his mother made an unsuccessful effort to revive her son.

When The Guardian news team arrived at the hospital, security guards were at every door but visitors and patients were only allowed through the main entrance, where they were screened, questioned and directed before entering.

All of the doors leading into the private hospital that would otherwise be open were locked as security guards kept a close watch to see who was leaving and entering. A security guard (who did not want to be named), said the heightened security measures were put in place to make sure the information was not leaked to the public and especially the press.

Anyone wanting to get into the hospital was forced to pass four security guards holding a list of patient names for all the wards.

"As I got off the elevator of the third floor, there were security guards everywhere asking me again and again where I was going and they made sure I went in that direction," said a visitor.

While members of the press were rushed into the conference room, hospital staff hustled the baby out into a waiting van, while Anna Nicole Smith's lawyer, Howard K Stern, rushed to the hospital parking lot at the same time.

The new mother was never seen, as she was reportedly whisked out of a backdoor exit. Photos of the baby wrapped in a pink and white blanket could not be taken, as all cameramen were diverted into the hospital conference room.

Daniel's lifeless body was then taken away in a hearse through a side exit.

Anna Nicole Smith, whose birth name is Vickie Lynn Hogan, is famous for her many Playboy magazine appearances and movie roles, and is also known for her controversial tactics on various award shows. She has also been the subject of headlines on controversial litigation hearings between herself and the son of her late husband, oil billionaire J Howard Marshall, with reference to certain provisions of Mr Marshall's last will.

Anna Nicole gave birth to her only son at age 18.

How very, very sad

Very sad. I really felt for him on her train wreck of a show (which I lovingly have on DVD). He seemed like the only sane one in her life. He also seemed kinda neglected while her life was all about her and her fame and trying to get the money promised to her by her late husband. He seemed almost embarrassed by her.
