ELECTRONIC nonsense!

I need help! sad

I have no stereo. My computer speakers suck.

I want to hear mp3's & cds out of real speakers (stereo?) AND hook the speakers up to my tv (home theater?)... Though I could do the same hookup with a standard shelf stereo system too...

There's just too much crap to consider - why can't they have an all in one system that will play cd's, dvd's, hook to the tv for sound, talk to my pc for ITunes music & have a port for my IPod as well? hmmm

Seems like everything I wanna do needs 50 components to make it work mad

And I wanna burn dvd's off my Tivo but you have to either buy that insanely Humax (sp?) player & only play them on there OR get the Sonic software... which means I need a dvd burner drive for my pc b/c I don't currently have one...

nutty Technology makes it so easy & ridiculous @ the same time nutty

I just don't wanna buy 5 pieces of equipment if I can get it all done with 2, you know?? confused

pout

Nah, I've had a laptop for a while but that's not in this equation...

I play music out of my pc, IPod & cd's...

So, basically, all you need is a good set of computer speakers. MP3's from the PC, CD's from the PC, and ipod when connected to the PC. Right? Problem solved!

But I still need speakers for the tv... & I don't want to listen to cd's on the computer, only ITunes... and I wanna burn dvds...

I just have a shitload of crap to buy - a shelf stereo that's mp3 ready, figure out a way to get my pc to play through those speakers, a dvd burner drive & the friggin software... OY!!

If you're willing to spend a little you can do what you're talking about with a few components. Depends on how much you want to spend.

For simplicity's sake, you could go with two items

1) a decent home theater in a box (onkyo makes some nice ones for a good price), and

2) something that can get the music from your laptop to your home theater speakers. something like this: (http://reviews.cnet.com/L...31888.html).

That gets your music off your computer and played through at least 5 speakers (stereo is so 1982) without spending too much. If you're an audiophile, you could do alot better (and spend alot more) than the home theater in a box, but since we're talking ipods I'm gonna guess that's not the case. Personally I'd get a separate DVD player, I'm not sold on the all in one systems, but they are out there if you want to spend a little more and think a little less.

p.s. I've got the sonic software solution for the Tivo to dvd thing, but honestly it gets used maybe once a year. "acquiring" tv shows through other means is so easy now that it's usually more practical to just find what I want and download it .

You fucking ROCK! headbang

I do already have a dvd player but I'm considering putting that one in my bedroom, so an all in one system seems kind of appealing to me.

Gonna check out the CNet link you gave, thanks! I swear when I go into Circuit City they can't tell me SHIT about how to condense everything I wanna do, they're just like, "Well you can buy this & this & that, I dunno." chair

And I hate to buy the dvd drive for the computer but Sonic is the way to go for me - I have at least 10 programs on my Tivo taking up room (@ best quality!!) & I'm dying to keep them but know damn well vhs is not the way I want to preserve them. I just gotta do it already smile

I just realized one of these problems is already solved for me! My wireless router hasn't been working for weeks but once I get that piece of shit back up I need to get my TivoToGo happening & then it'll be easy to get my music to play from the PC to the speakers via that tv. I'm feeling better already razz

Series 2, but I figured it out - apparently you have to have mp3 files instead of AAC files in order for Tivo to recognize them. So I have to change the format of my library... all 6500+ songs eek

That just sucks sad. Reason #1 why I don't convert my music. Too many compatability issues unless you stay with Apple.

But I love love LOVE my ITunes!! sad Another fix would be to get some better speakers for my computer but that's kinda what I'm trying to avoid - buying one set for the comp & having another set for the home theater just across the room confused

Don't misunderstand me, I'm Itunes' bitch also. I'm just not a fan of the AAC format. 99% of my colleciton is mp3 cause it works with everything, including itunes.

Have you actually bought that much material off Itunes that converting AAC's to mp3 would be difficult?

From what I read I'm supposed to be able to just right click it & change the format but it's not working so far - the only quick-change option is AAC, which is the format I've imported everything as. I'd say 98% of the stuff is ripped from my own cd's neutral That shit took forever, I won't re-rip these things. There's gotta be a way to select & change the format, otherwise I'll just get some speakers for the computer. I don't wanna invest in ITunes all over again, you know? sigh

You're supposed to be able to convert unprotected AAC's without much problem. Protected AAC's bought from Itunes is trickier.

"Unprotected AAC to MP3 To make a copy of an AAC file that you can play on a third-party MP3 player, open iTunes’ Importing preference pane, and select MP3 Encoder from the Import Using drop-down menu. Because you’re converting from one lossy format to another, use the Higher Quality option to minimize further loss in quality.

Next, select the tracks you want to convert and, from iTunes’ Advanced menu, choose Convert Selection To MP3. iTunes creates MP3 versions of the tracks and adds them to your music library.

This process leaves your original AAC files unchanged, so you’ll have two versions of each song you convert. To deal with the duplicates, corral them into a smart playlist with the criterion Kind Is MPEG Audio File (see “Find Those Files”). "

Thanks for that biggrin Yea, I know the ones I've purchased from them will require me burning them to disc then re-importing them as mp3. I must be doing something wacko w/ converting the others, I'm just not seeing the option. But I'll keep looking...

Headed out to get my dual tuner Tivo & home theater so I'll have toys to tinker w/ when I get home from work later drool

biggrin

of course there are ways around burning your purchased songs

Can't vouch for it myself, but some people seem to be happy with this approach.

Damn! Well I guess it beats burning and ripping a bunch of cds.
neutral

I think you've inadvertently been my guinea pig on this program. I've got a few Itunes Store purchases that I've thought about subjecting to this program. From your experience it seems like a weekend when I'm doing other things kinda project.

Well, it just finished lol But I'm realizing that if I want to play my playlists I'm gonna have to recreate them, which is a drag sigh

BUT I kinda separate them out already - I have brief playlists for my IPod (only 4 gigs, so I can pack more on it) & a "home" version of each playlist w/ more on it. I only have to recreate the "home" playlists w/ the mp3 versions of the songs & can keep the smaller AAC files on my IPod. At some point I'm SURE this will make me batty nutty but I gotta give it a shot. Hopefully there's some quick function that'll allow me to duplicate playlists easily instead of going song by song! eek

I will ONLY import mp3's from this point on!!! wall
