Daughter Keeps Dad's Death On Train Secret

80-Year-Old Man Died In Colorado, Traveled To Chicago

POSTED: 6:09 am CDT September 5, 2006
UPDATED: 7:26 am CDT September 5, 2006

CHICAGO -- An 80-year-old Indiana father apparently died while on a train with his daughter, who did not alert authorities of his death until the train, coming from California, pulled into Union Station in Chicago on Monday afternoon.

The woman, from Grayslake, Ill., was traveling on a train with her father from California to Chicago when, in Glenwood Springs, Colo., the man died, according to a Central District police lieutenant.

The man suffered from lung cancer and brain cancer, said the lieutenant. He was traveling in the sleeping car, according to the lieutenant.

"She said she didn't have any money to ship him home [from Glenwood Springs], so she waited (until) she got here'' to notify anyone, the lieutenant said.

The woman notified authorities when they pulled into Union Station, the lieutenant said.

Daniel Stepanovich, 80, of 7508 Magoun Ave., in Hammond, was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. at the Stein Institute, according to a spokesman from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

An autopsy was scheduled for later Tuesday for Stepanovich.

I don't really see what's wrong with what she did. It doesn't say how long she waited until she told the authorities, unless I've missed it in the article somewhere. I can't even figure out why it's news, to be honest.

I know on planes that if someone dies they usually move the people sitting next to them to other seats but they won't necessarily land the plane until it gets to its destination. A friend of mine was sitting behind a man who died on a journey back from New Zealand and all they did was cover him with a blanket so it looked like he was sleeping. I think it's the best thing to do.

Death is natural but we continue to see it as something unnatural or unusual.

Thats not that bad. confuse

I wouldnt have ran out and told the whole carriage, if I knew he was definitely dead, why would you want them all in there taking him away, prodding at him and creating a scene? Its different if he could be resuscitated of course, but it doesnt sound like it. I would rather some time alone with him. nod
