He was a really nice bloke. He really cared about Australia and made an effort to put Australia back on the map. He'll be missed by everyone.

first i always thought his show was just stupid and risk taking for no reason
but after a while i realised what he was doing: educating people on creatures
that usually get little or no love and preserving their habitat etc etc.

he took some pretty big risks though. i remember seeing him hike through some
marshes with his baby girl at the time on his arm

eek

i think that being around such dangerous creatures all the time makes you too
confident that you can judge the situation carefully.

but whoever he was on television or for australia promotion, i care more for
the personal tragedy or a wife and two small children losing their dad.

hope they will be fine sad

ps: that other, younger guy who had a wildlife show on discovery a while, he
died out there filming too, didn't he? i can't remember his name

OMG sad I've just seen this... I can't believe it sad Steve Irwin was a hero of mine for many reasons but mostly because his undeniable love protection and education of wildlife - he did SO much for wildlife and conservation not only in Australia but over the world. and much of it was not even publicised (I know people who knew him)

my heart goes out to Teri and the children cry

wow...

RIP Steve rose

Mourners pay tribute at zooBy Evan Schwarten
September 04, 2006 04:48pm

MOURNERS laid flowers at the entrance of Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo on Queensland's Sunshine Coast today after the man known as the Crocodile Hunter died in a marine accident.

The 44-year-old was killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest while he was diving off Port Douglas in north Queensland.

Tourists joined locals to pay tribute by leaving bouquets of flowers at the front entrance of the zoo at Beerwah made famous by the naturalist and media personality.

Rod Cameron of Brisbane said he rushed to the zoo as soon as he heard the tragic news.

"We heard the news ... it's very sad and we are very upset. Australia just lost a bloody good bloke," he said.

"We grew up in Brisbane, followed his career. We just thought he was a good guy for what he did for Australia.

"He put us on the map I reckon."

Melbourne's Glenn Batson took time out from travelling around Queensland with friends to pay his respects.

"He died doing what he loved, didn't he?" he said.

About half a dozen flowers had been left outside the zoo within hours of the tragic news as devastated staff looked on.

Jeff Corwin? confuse

I think he is still alive. I like Jeff alot becuase he goes into extreme detail about the habitat and behaviors of the animals he's with. shrug

These hollywood style nature hosts were/are doing alot to bring attention to the masses about the world around us. Dare I say it, they've even snagged some of the MTV audience.

I am so sad to hear this news, Steve Irwin was a legend, a great character and a great campaigner for animal rights. This is such a shame to die at such a young age.

Much love to Terri, Bindi and Bob, they should be very proud

I suppose that's because we are exposed to that sort of wildlife a lot. Americans aren't exposed to it so much, so they love seeing it on TV. Plus, I think Steve Irwin seemed like a common character to us, but seemed like a really outgoing and obscure character to Americans. They just loved him and his show more than we did I guess.

my 6 year old son was watching Johnny Howard saying how distressing this was on telly, and he turned to me to ask "why is that man so sad?" !!

From NineMSN:

Professor Geoff Jones, of James Cook University's Marine Biology Department, said he did not want not speculate on what Irwin was doing when struck by the stingray but that it must have been unusual.

He said it was possible the barb alone – regardless of the stingray's toxin - had been responsible for the death.

"It's a bit like being stabbed with a bayonet," he said. "If it stays in, you can survive, but if it's withdrawn, whipped in and out, then I don't think you can survive the bleeding."

this is going to be unpopular amongst Aussies, but one thing I've always liked about John Howard is that he shows his human side... the "real" John if you will not the PM

I find that very refreshing and good to see nod I believe Steve was actually a friend of John's too sad

CRIKEY!!!

Death is inevitable 4 us all.
The thing about death that shocks and saddens us most I think, is having 2 face our own mortality. Shame when the good die young.
This man had an extraordinary life, doing what he loved most, right 2 the very end. Made countless positive contributions as a conservationist, and will continue 2 do so, long after his passing.
A life well worth celebrating. cool

Not a fan of Howard at all. But I know that Steve was... I much prefer Steve's Australia than Howard's, though.

Oh look, it's a dick.

Not true at all, if you actually knew me, you'd know I find quite disgusting things very funny. it's the way I have been and always will be.
why the fuck should anyone be conscious anyways.
Why the fuck should you feel offended by that bbc news picture, for example? It would be justifiable if you were a friend, or relative, of Steve, but as it is, to my knowledge, you aren't. I hate people who say "that offends me" when you post a picture of myra hindley or something. Why? How does it offend you? Please elaborate, or are you just saying it because you feel society obligates you to?
