I'm being offered a job with less hours, better benefits and more money.

Said job is a graveyard shift position.

I've done a graveyard shift before, and I swore I never would again.

However, I was working longer hours than this job offers, and I will be making more money. There's also the possibility of them moving me to days if such a position opens up.

Plus, I'm fed up with where I am. But what if this new gig isn't much better?

Part of me wants to take the new gig, and if it makes me miserable, it'll be motivation to find something better. Another part of me would rather stick out more time where I am and know my misery, than to throw myself into new situations where I don't know if it could be even worse.

I don't think I could handle graveyard no matter what. The rest of my life is too important.

and no one is ever happy with their job, there's ALWAYS complaints... so i'd say carpe diem before the diem is carpe'd by someone else.

working nights or graveyard shifts is totally easy for me in winter, when the days are short and dark anyway. if i started a graveyard shift now and worked through the winter, by next spring they might be impressed enough with my work to bring me on to days. i know i'm good enough to make an impression, but what if they're looking for someone REALLY good to work graveyard shifts forever?!?

the health/body clock thing is whatever. i can adapt. i really don't want it to turn me into a hermit, though. i mean, worse than i am already.

If you were certain that this would turn into a day job in the future, I'd say go ahead. If not, I'd wait for something else to come along.

I know you hated nights. You hated everything that went with working nights. You also wanted to work days so you could persue other things that working days would allow.

Did you ever get to do those things you wanted that only days would allow?

Is this work much different than your present job?

How much more are you getting paid? Like a little or a lot more? Personally, I would probably not switch jobs for less than 5K more unless I was in a bad situation. I am of the age where I need that type of boost in salary to make it worth my trouble (consider that a raise will likely happen in a year, so this is your only chance for a boost in salary until then). I also think that anything under a 5K boost, you will barely see.

Is the job closer or further than it is now to your home? Will it be accessable at night? Safe at night?

And if you do get switched to days, they may cut your pay to compensate. Thats what they do here at the Mayo Clinic. The extra money is a shift premium.

I wouldn't do it just based on the graveyard shift. A swing shift 3-11 is optimal for me but after about 330 am my brain refuses to function correctly.

How miserable are you in your current situation? is it possible that you could find another position that is better for you? Will you be able to job hunt and work those hours? or will you be stuck there until they offer you a shift change?

You have to do what your instincts tell you Anx, and at the end of the day what we think wont affect that much BUT IMO you only live once. Lifes too short - do it for a short time, take the money and the benefits and if you don't like it - leave. How much chance do you have of getting your present job back if you need/want to? thats something to consider...

at the new job i'd have a shorter work week, which i would assume would make a significant difference if i'm working the wee hours.

i seem to be going through a lot of transition this year anyway, so maybe it's a sign that i need to hit the refresh button all around, including my job.

all seriousness Chris, sounds like a good move other than the shift time, but sometimes you have to give to get.
