When you just wanna buy something and the cashier starts asking your personal business

I totally freakin' HATE when I go to Beast Buy or Radio Shack for something inane like batteries or a printer cartridge and when the cashier rings me up they're all "WHAT'S YOUR PHONE NUMBER?!?!" "WHAT'S YOUR ZIP CODE!?!?"

I went through a phase where I'd ask them why the info was necessary and they said it was some marketing bullshit and I'd tell them I wasn't giving them my phone number and they'd get all huffy until I just broke down and gave it to them. I just find it creepy that this is done and more people don't find it invasive and weird.

The next time I sell a Jill Jones single on eBay I'm going to ask the winning bidder their shoe size, see how that goes over.

When RFID merchandise and ID's will be the norm, they won't have to ask you, you're ID and merchanise will be tracked. RFID merchandise is quite normal nowadays to.

i don't want to start spouting all the same old paranoid shit about american privacy but i must admit it happens A LOT over there and bugged me too when i wanted to buy something. people tend to leave you alone more here.

shrug

what i REALLY hate is when someone will question your personal TASTE for buying a particular item.

i once had to tell someone i was paying for the product, not their personal opinion!!

razz

went across the street and bought the same items without the questions

comfort

isn't that a security precaution though? I think somehow the system matches the entered zip code to make sure it matches your billing zip code. Or am I just grasping at straws here?

I'm tryina remember if I've been asked for my phone number by a cashier before. I can't recall that I have.

I'm so used to giving out my zip code though that I don't even think about it anymore. That seems a titch less invasive than phone number...

if you are referring to "pay at the pump" type transactions, then I think it is a security measure.

Again, I may be talking out my ass. I've only had 1 cup of coffee so far, so who knows? smile

i just say no thanks when that happens. if they ask me why i ask them how it is they're entitled to ask for this information in the context of a simple transaction. usually shuts them right up biggrin

RFID?

Radio Frequency Identification. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. An RFID tag is an object that can be attached to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radio waves. Chip-based RFID tags contain silicon chips and antennas. Passive tags require no internal power source, whereas active tags require a power source. (wikipedia)

Many companies are now attaching or sewing this into the product....Target, Walmart, Levi Jeans, Gillete Razors

As far as I know, they only do that here in the UK when you buy a tv-related product. Say, an actual television or a set-top box.

(We have to pay an annual television license so they give your details to the authorities to make sure you cough up).

I can understand why they do that - annoying as it is lol - but I'm not sure I'd like it if they were asking me in the way you describe. It's not as if companies don't have enough information about us as it is. confused

And, Mach - clapping That's exactly what I'd do. smile

"Behind" the Best Buy isn't the same as actually being in the store.
