Resignation Letter Advice?

After almost 10 years with the firm, I've been "given an offer I can't refuse".

As I begin to write this letter of resignation, I'm nervous as all can be, should this letter be ...

"Thankfully Long Winded"
or "Short and and to the Point"?

I really am terrified. It's like I grew up at this place. I know it's going to take me 24 to 48 hours to hit that "send" button as well, but I'd really like to give 10 days notice so I can collect my vacation days.

What's the standard for these sort of things?

short and to the point, with maybe a sentence or two describing what you liked about the place, but impress why you are leaving.

Short and to the point is best
All they need is the resignation date

This is the one I used:

While I have enjoyed working with (company), effective (date) I will be resigning to pursue another opportunity that better compliments my education and interests. Thank you for the opportunity with the company.

Short and to the point, but gracious and thankful for the opportunities the company you are leaving afforded you. This would leave a valuable opening in the event you would need a letter of recommendation in the future.

Just " As of ...DATE ..I resign my position at ..COMPANY."

Don't say why you may have liked the job in the letter. Mention that, if you feel you need to, to someone.

Awesome link! Thanks, I'll use just that.

It's felt more like a 10 year college. I've gotten more education than I would have ever been able to afford through school, and much more effective.

My new job is going to let me work out of my studio. So yay! I still can visit the org. I got my "package" in the mail last week. It's pretty exciting. Very pro. Feels like I got a record deal for what I do: Creative Services (multi media/video/photography/graphic arts/web design/audio/etc.

Oh yeah, new kick ass job title: "Creative Services Architect". (thanks beau)

I did it!

Dear [Mr. Man],
Please accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation from [The Corporation], effective September 14th, 2006. The associations I've made during my employment here will truly be memorable for years to come.

I made this decision, not because I'm unhappy with the opportunities you've presented, but as a strategic career move. It's been a great pleasure working with you and representing the company. I wish you and [The Corporation] continued success.

Please feel free to call on me if I can help to ensure a smooth transition.

Sincerely,

Kelly,
Creative Services Architect

Man! That was so frickin' hard to do! I dunno, maybe after almost 10 years you fall into a "comphort zone".

I called my boss before I sent it to personally thank him for the many opportunities including the 20% raise I had just got and it was a very hard decission. I disclosed only a few vague details and he congradulated me tremendously. He aslo asked if I would be able to do some freelance work for the company in the near future after things get back to some sort of state of normal. I'm not so sure about that "conflicts of interest" clause in the new company's policies, but I said I would deffinately do what I could without giving away that little tid-bit cause it would pretty much raise a flag that I was going to a competitor.

Thanks all for the advise. And thanks 9's for that link. It was most helpful.

A warmer and braver gesture would be to deliver a physical handwritten letter into your bosses hands. I think we all know emails are cowardly and ugly.

Be sure to state how much you enjoyed working with the company/organization,embellish on this, that way if the new job doesn't pan out, your old employer might take you back, assuming you were a good employee. Don't burn any bridges.
