Indeed. I was thinking though that "classic" for this thread meant older movies that have faded from the public consciousness. They don't have to have faded from public consciousness...in fact, it's often surprising how many well known movies have not been widely seen by the public...we tend to assume that, say, "The Godfather" has been seen by everyone--I only just saw it last year for the first time lol...same for "Casablanca" ... But yeah, they should be older movies, and not ones released 5 years ago...lol ...let time determine their place in movie history....then we'll take turns coming up with a list of ten for people to choose from.

some of those in your list would come under this list,, Blue Velvet? That's an interesting question. I don't think there's a definite answer as to what makes a 'cult' movie. Someone's masterpiece is always likely to be another's 'Police Academy IV' or something. For me I appreciate films for different reasons. I love films that always make critics' list of all time greats; 'The Godfather' and 'Apocalypse Now' are two that spring to mind yet there are films that I also love irrationally like 'Big'. I think also cult movies could also apply to movies that are 'so bad they're good' and for me one of those is 'Purple Rain' or maybe an object of a quasi-religious worship-'Star Wars' for example, which I love like a lot of folks. I think the word 'cult' also applies to some kind of secrecy, a knowledge of films that a lot of other folks don't know about but you love. I have few which I recommend to you all-'Sexy Beast', 'Annie Hall' (to some at least), 'Amores Perros', '36' and most recently, 'The Squid and the Whale' which I thought was excellent.

I definitely agree about "so bad they're good," these films flop at the box office, like a lot of good films some of the best movies never made much of a dent in mainstream cinema but they sold well on video and DVD. Star Wars for me is more of commercial film (rather than cult because it was seen by trillions) it does have an obsessive fan base that studies every detail of the film, but the whole merchandising around it makes it very commecrial. Withnail & I for instance I might list as a cult movie because it wasn't a commercial success, but it has gained quite a status amongst a small audience of devotees. some good low small budgets also get a following amongst smaller groups of movie goers. I'm no expert on film, but it just crossed my mind reading this thread.

I haven't seen Gigli, but I want to just to see if it's as bad as all that. Sometimes I wonder about Rocky Horror. It's a pretty bad movie, but it's cool, what were the intentions? Some movies are great and not flops, but they gain additionaL cult following because of something perhaps undefinable, like the Big Lebowski. My Legacy

some of those in your list would come under this list,, Blue Velvet? To me, a cult movie is one that took years to reach its level of popularity, usually by word of mouth over a long period of time...has an obsessive fan base...and is usually made on a very small budget.

"Petey Wheatstraw (Rudy Ray Moore) is a candidate to become the devil's son-in-law. The storyline is a scaffolding on which Rudy Ray Moore's standup humor can be unfolded. Beginning life as the afterbirth to a watermelon, the young Wheatstraw becomes a martial artist, but is unable to best the evil comedy team of Leroy and Skillet, who also indulge in wholesale murder. Satan restores the comedians' victims to life, and charges Petey with the task of marrying his clock-stoppingly ugly daughter to giving him a grandchild. When Petey attempts to default on the deal, he is pursued by the devil's henchmen." Oh, this is SO going on my Netflix list...lol
