Rent A Movie Classic Thread...

Thought of this after seeing someone's thread (CinisterCee??) about renting "Casablanca"...

I'll list ten movie classics, and over the next week or so try and pick one movie on the list to watch (it must be one you haven't seen before, obviously), and then post back here as far as your review, impressions, etc...someone else can come up with ten new movies next week...lol

My top ten to choose from are:

Raging Bull
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Next
Sounder
Midnight Cowboy
Heat Of The Night
Clerks
Kiss Me Deadly
Blue Velvet
Boyz N The Hood
Cool Hand Luke

Alright, go out and expand your horizons, people... cool

Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

Please...Clerks is an indie classic, and somewhere around ten billion times funnier and ten trillion times better written than Smokey And The Bandit...

Kevin Smith got really lucky wih Clerks, it's basically like a student film, kinda overrated.

But Smokey and the Bandit has got to represent everything that's wrong with Hollywood--huge actors, huge budget, car chases, horrible movie.

I haven't seen some of these--Cool Hand Luke, Sounder (I don't even know that one), and Kiss Me Deadly. I've been meaning to watch Cool Hand Luke.

Casablanca really is a great movie; I watched it recently for the first time.

Kiss Me Deadly is definitely an influential movie... nod..it also has its flaws..lol...in one scene, a character says "Yes, sir!" but his lips don't move...lol...in another scene, you actually see the tip of the mic appear up in the corner for a second.. lol...some of the acting is pretty hammy, although it's well known that back in the 40's and 50's, actors and directors didn't expect the acting to be realistic, it was drama and as such acting was meant to be over-dramatic, not realistic (according to Bette Davis)...and seeing the hard-as-nails protagonist slapping guys to rough them up instead of punching them, as well as drinking milk instead of bourbon, kinda gives off a few unintentional laughs...lol smile

Yet the movie is a classic because it takes the noir genre pretty much to its limits and combines it with some sci fi, has lots of mysterious characters, and ends with a freakish headscratcher...you can see it's influence all over the map afterwards...

A few suggestions of movies I've seen:

Casablanca -- It's hard to find a better-scripted movie in the history of the genre, with the possible exception of . . .

The Lion In Winter -- Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn deliver two of the finest performances in movie history.

The Magnificent Seven -- A prelude to the "antihero" flicks of the late 60's and early 70's.

Of Human Bondage -- A nice romantic drama featuring a young Bette Davis.

To Kill A Mockingbird -- 'nuff said.

That's a dense movie, but one of my favorites. Really great, the whole basis for movies like LA Confidential.

Actually, The Two Jakes, though not nearly as good, isn't awful.

What is a "Movie Classic"? I'm thinking about movies that came out before 1970.

IMDb Plot Summary for
Sounder (1972)

The Morgans, a loving and strong family of Black sharecroppers in Louisiana in 1933, face a serious family crisis when the husband and father, Nathan Lee Morgan, is convicted of a petty crime and sent to a prison camp. After some weeks or months, the wife and mother, Rebecca Morgan, sends the oldest son, who is about 11 years old, to visit his father at the camp. The trip becomes something of an odyssey for the boy. During the journey he stays a little while with a dedicated Black schoolteacher.

Anything pretty much universally critically acclaimed as being among the best...movies that become hugely influential...ones that stand out among their peers for various reasons (all of which are good lol)...milestone movies...things like that.

Indeed. I was thinking though that "classic" for this thread meant older movies that have faded from the public consciousness. But as the thread reads, I see your point. Here are a few in my queue.

Lawrence of Arabia

Manhattan

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Bullitt

From Here to Eternity

Seven Samurai

The 39 Steps

A Man for All Seasons

Five Easy Pieces

Some Like It Hot

Laurence Olivier's Hamlet

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

8 1/2

Dr. Strangelove

Guess Who

Rebel Without a Cause: Special Edition

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Conversation

Citizen Kane

It usually takes some time for things to be considered classics (to put them in perspective), but some art gets to that status quickly.

Goodfellas got there quick, Pulp Fiction, too.
