not a nervous breakdown as such... but an emotional breakdown I guess. a few times within the last so many months. I'm just lucky I'm in a receptionist area I can hide away and get myself together I guess

I work with 2 ladies that are kinda nuts. I love them but Lawd!!! One of them is a Clerk. She is an obsessive recycler/collector/pack rat. She has so much garbage under her desk it's crazy. Her assistant is a germaphobe to the nth degree. She scrubs down her desk for 45 minutes before she even touches her keyboard. When she leaves for lunch she wears gloves because she takes the stairs and has to use the handrail. She is constantly scrubbing her hands with moist towelettes. Almost every hour on the hour.

Doesn't that just make you want to walk up and sneeze on her? LOL smile

A co-worker of mine does stuff to her. It's kinda mean but funny. She once offered her some sandwiches from the night before. She kept insisting that she have one, literally backing her up into a corner. She was about to crawl up the wall.

I felt bad that I laughed.

I saw someone get carried out on a stretcher too last week.

I really don't think a job is worth that kind of stress (assuming it was just the job).

My team lead just had a nervous breakdown and they're letting her leave work for a few days. eek

Withought getting into too many details I'm a Project Manager for IT projects for a major bank. We constantly have to deal with major project stakeholders (execs, the CEO, etc.) and part of our interactions involve deals, handshakes, and heated negotiations. Basically, you have to look at some big wig in the eye and explain to him why he has to follow the process and how much time it will take when he does so--then you have to explain to him why you're going to charge him 100k for something he wants delivered to his computer--among overseeing your resource's work, etc. It's very stressful, and often thankless.

Well, she's a "yes" person. I've never seen her go into a negotiation without leaving it with a parking-lot sheet filled with todo's. It's got me thinking.

We do that in real life too.
Some people are "yes" people and some are "no". Some pick and choose. But I've never seen a "yes" person who attained a position of authority where all hell didn't break loose. Things are a mess.

Have you ever witness a nervous breakdown at work?
Becuase of her I might have to fly out to friggen Columbus Ohio to Interview for filling in for a few weeks--they like me cuase I'm an asshole. rolleyes

hug Oh thank you. I know what you mean. Yeah, I'm still "in it" at this moment. And yeah, some things just take too damn long to explain here on the org. I haven't talked to anyone here really about it. Mostly because I hate typing for too long. lol

I choose my battles according to what's really worth getting stressed about and what's not worth it. I think my boss's heart will explode any day now because he's one of those yes men. He has a title, a few extra dollars and no real authority. It's a middle management position where he's basically a lightning rod for problems from subordinates, superiors and clients. He runs around most of the day like a chicken with his head cut off, afraid of his own shadow.

He's always asking me why I don't apply. I tell him hell no, you mofos ain't gonna kill me. lol I'm also the union steward/organizer where I work so I have enough on my plate dealing with employee/management issues.

A few weeks ago a man at my son's job literally dropped dead at the office. That really shook him for a few days. eek

I know, right? It was crazy. The guy was in his mid fourties. My son says he was a great guy. He didn't have any known health problems and his heart just went poof. Everyone was so distraught that they had to close for the day.

My husband had one at work, he was trying to do all the work himself, silly bugger. He was sent home, given the week off to think about how to approach the whole position differently (it was a management position too).

Then all of a sudden it clicked, he became Mr. Delegation, "don't come to me with problems, come to me with solutions!" and off he went. Promotion after promotion since.

He always looks back on that day as his epiphany. He was very lucky, had a great mentor and very understanding team to support him through it.

In a position I nearly took recently, I found out during an interview that the woman who was filling in actually went off on the boss a week before, that she'd been seeing crying fairly regularly.

The team leader who told me this -- while also saying that if I took the job, I'd be worked like a dog and a slave -- was looking out for me. Turns out we had the same mentor.

So, yeah, I declined that job...

Yeah, I had a coworker once who lost it. I was explaining the staff schedule to her, and I used the word "family", and all of a sudden she went OFF about how her mother had just died and she was all alone and it wasn't her fault that she didn't have a family and I'm just like

omg omg omg

It's like, I'm sorry, I really am, but stop yelling at me! Geezus! disbelief

Fauxie

I had several breakdowns when I started teaching at my first school. The idea of just teaching a new class in a new school was enough to make me nervous, but when the other staff pretty much ignored me and offered no help or support it became unbearable. I couldn't eat breakfast in the morning and was literally a shivering wreck. After a while I built up a wall and could get through it, but with zero enthusiasm or interest in the job. This compounded the problem ultimately because although I was a stronger person as far as going to work each day and feeling alright, it meant that it was hard to really care about the children getting a good education, so when I left I felt like the whole experience had been a failure and was completely downhearted about being a teacher in this country.

Actually, I'm thinking of moving beyond IT and corporate America. I don't think people should be working in cubes, flying from city to city, and sitting in front of computers all day. It's bad for the soul.

Dan, when you find out what that thing is, drop me an Orgnote. I'd like to know what it is myself.
