The American public transit system countrywide is not quite the same as some other countries.. there are indeed weirdos, but don't let that put you off... like most things, especially in America, you get what you pay for! Have funn, nat... and anyone else priveleged enough to be part of this expedition! wish i could go!

thanks John and Fantasy I'll be honest the way people talk about it DOES sound scary... but its either that or I can't go really. the train is a fair bit more expensive plus you don't get to see the real country, do you?
John you're right though when you say you get what you pay for

It's a very economical way to travel and the 'crazies' are part of the adventure. It's certainly not dangerous. |

THANK YOU Carrie... that's good to hear I will say, the advice about watching your bag and keeping your wits about you is good, but that goes for anyone traveling alone anywhere. You just never know. But I've taken the bus on longer trips before, and while its not the most comfortable, nor the most fun, its cheap and gets you where you want to go. You'll be fine. |

The last time I took a train in the states (from here to New Orleans! ) was over 10 years ago and at the time it cost about the same as airfare. Buses are generally much cheaper. It really just depends on the time of year, what deals may be going on, the economy, lots of factors. |

Get yourself a 4x4, not a minivan, a proper 4x4, I have never done an trans-american roas trip, but I have been on an Egypt to Morocco trek, took a Land Rover and it saved our lives on a few occasions Quite simply - money it's EXTREMELY cheap for a non-US citizen to get an unlimited pass for the whole of the US and plus I really like travelling and don't mind bus travel at all I'm sick I know My best friend took a trip across the U.S. and into Canada on a train.
