Kids don't understand money until they have to earn it.
If she gets a part-time job and see whats see has to do to make $174 for something that's out of style in six months, she'd learn.

hmmm Well, that first pair IS kinda funky. lol

I dunno... I have a wierd position on expensive clothes. I'm not materialistic and, to some degree, am quite actively anti-materialistic. I watch what I buy, I throw away or donate things I know I don't need, etc. And generally, my clothing is pretty justifiable in price. On occassion, though, I've been known to splurg on a piece or two. It's not that I do it to "fit in," show off or overcompensate for a low self-image or something (all of which I DO think many people do... and it's very unhealthy). But a cool garment might be looked at like a piece of art -- no practicality, just sheer fun and beauty... for fun and beauty's sake. Looked at that way, if other more important things in life are taken care of first -- AND you can afford the occassional output of money -- I don't think a taste for an occassionally absurdly expensive couture is THAT bad. There are certainly worse habits to have.

...But one SHOULD probably have their own job for this kinda stuff. It's best to work for what you have. You better appreciate it.

I have been eyeing this pair of Prada frames for about 9 months...

They're understated, but they're kind of quirky when worn (shades of Stanley Tucci in The Devil Wears Prada lol) ...and they look cool on me, which is rare.

They've been discontinued in the United States, and the only pair I've seen in Canada is like $275 -- even before the prescription lenses! I know the price is insane, but I've been a good boy, I've responsibly save up some dough, and I think I might treat myself to this pleasure in the next couple weeks or so.

when i was a kid, i threw a hissy because i wanted a colecovision RIGHT NOW.

so. my mom sat me down and told me if i saved up half the cost of it with my allowance money, she'd match it. and so i did. and so she did. and i got my colecovision, and it was the first "big" thing i'd ever (contributed toward) buying with my own money...even if "my" money was technically allowance money from my mom. lol

maybe do something like that? if a kid has to put up some of the cost, they can understand the value of $200 pants.

I totally agree with this approach. I think it's cool for a kid to have the occassional treat that they really probably don't deserve and that's completely mindless... but at the same time, it's important to teach work ethic and value.

If my kid wanted an absurd $300 pair of jeans, I'd be taken aback, but more impressed she had the motivation to work for $150 or it. I'd totally match it. (Though, all the while letting her know there are perhaps more imporatnt things she could do with that amount -- and that I'd be more inclined to support -- next time around.)

A friend of ours said their kid wanted some fancy brand sneakers, so he chose a pair that looked similar at K-Mart and told his kid - here's the $40 I'm prepared to buy you sneakers with, you will raise the money (allowance, car washing, dog walking, after school job etc) for the $150 difference.
The kid did! eek

Tough choice. Both very funky, thought the Jones NY pair might be more practical.

I envy you. My facial shape would never support these.

I just considered something...

I see that you've already opted for another pair of jeans, Byron, but have you thought about buying the ones your daughter wants, not telling her, and suprising the heck out of her after she does something, say, incredible! I dunno... maybe assign her some project or something she will learn from. Maybe some charitable effort. Don't let her know she has anything coming, so she won't be working from a selfish motivation. Then, when she's done, out of the clear blue sky, spring these babies on her! She'd FAINT!

That's the thing though - I have a pair that's pretty practical already but I want a darker pair, hence the Prada's. I was SHOCKED that they looked good on me eek I usually can't do something so square but they work biggrin

The Jones pair would just be extra for when I want a change, the semi-cat eye is just too cute & they're only $62 online omfg
