I just bought a new pair from a pretty upmarket shop in Bangkok for the equiv. of $20. Jeans here usually cost around $5-$10 so I was really splashing out.
I love them, and my new shoes.

I get what both of ya are saying. But I'm sure there are some things you value enough to spend that much money on. Everyone's got their thing. I adore clothes. Fashion is an artform. Even when it's stuff you wear every day. I love finding beauty in everyday things. We all gotta wear clothes. It makes me happy to look cute everyday. Some people find clothes to be simply utilitarian. Cover your body and keep you warm. And that's fine too. I think most folks are somewhere in bewteen. I DON'T pay that much money for clothes cause I can't afford to. lol. But if I could, hell yeah, I would. That's all. I agree. I am absolutely obsessed with clothes and shoes. But it has nothing to do with designer brands or high prices. Sometimes I pay a lot for something, and sometimes I get it at Ragstock. I'm really into vintage stuff, so if I splurge on something, most likely it's vintage. Either that, or it's something I found that I know no one else will have. I like to shop in different countries when we travel and get really well-made things that I know I can't get where I live. But as for jeans, well I've found that I have to spend a lot for a pair that will fit me. I have tailored my own jeans, but damn it's a hell of a lot of work. I'd rather just spend the money. I get a text message the other day from my daughter: Her: Will u give me $174 for jeans? Me: How many pairs of jeans are you buying? Her: One I called her after that...lol... As I'm laughing and saying "That is insane!" over and over to her, she says "And they're on sale, dad"...I ask her how much they USUALLY cost...she says "About $270"...wtf?!?! I said that her first name would have to be "Christina" and her last name "Aguilera" in order for her to be wearing $174 jeans...she laughed...lol...I asked her to describe them to me, to tell me what makes them worth so much in her eyes, what she likes about them...said something about different color stitching in the pockets and a "U" on the pockets...I dunno...I just kept freaking out...lol I'm taking her shopping later this week...ain't buyin' her no damn $200 pair of jeans, though... Have you ever bought your kids something that was ridiculously overpriced but thought "eh, what the hell" anyway? (other than for their birthday or Xmas)... *Edit: ok, here are a shot of the brand of jeans she's wanting (not sure of the style yet)... [Edited 8/23/06 17:06pm] 200 for those??!? I laugh because I went through this last year with Haley! Granted we weren't talking about a $200 pair of jeans, but you know. If she were an adult, with minimal chance of soon outgrowing these jeans, I'd say jump on it, this once, and splurge on the jeans that make her heart soar! The thing with teenage girls is that we do want what our peers have and can feel pretty bad when we don't measure up in fashion along with them. I guess I wouldn't jump to buy them, but I wouldn't count out the purchase either. I'd talk to her and find out if the reason she wants them is soley for the fact that her friends have them or is it because they do look that fantastic on her! Explain to her that she will grow out of them before she knows it. Is this a once in a blue moon type of purchase for her? Or, if she gets these will she want whatever the next designer item is that costs a fortune? If you have a school clothes budget for her I'd break that down for her. If it's $500 say, well, you get these you have $200 left to buy other jeans, shirts, panties, socks and shoes, etc., but if you decide against it you could get more of the other things. The thing is, if she is like most girls and you do purchase these for her, she'll love 'em to death, but if she decides on the embellished ones she probably won't be wearing them that often because it is too noticeable to peers that she just wore those last week! (Went through that in my teens and dealt with that last year as you know). Your daughter is not a greedy girl and she knows the value of a dollar. If you want to do this for her, I'd go ahead and do it after you've talked more about it. If she decides that maybe she wants to make her (your) money go further she could buy two - four pairs of less expensive jeans and have a larger wardrobe to play around with! And, maybe, if she still wants them and you do decide to get them for her but are still struggling with the price for a few yards of denim, maybe buy them and have her do something to work off half of the money that you just spent. Just an idea. Good luck! Gotta go and lie down now. I have the flu, but wanted to comment because this brought back so many struggles from last school year and Haley was only seven!

But, butt (lol) while out with her friends on the weekends... And, she's a good girl. Best wishes with your girl too!
