If you want to do it via USB you'll probably need to buy a USB to USB cable which comes with software to enable transferring. As far as I know USB to USB does not come as standard with most PC's but maybe yours does. If so that's the best route.

If you're only talking about a few gig then burn a DVD. As pook points out it's always good to have a backup.

If you're talking about a significant quantity of gigage then this may be the best method :

Temporarily insert the drive from your old pc into the new one.
(make sure you switch machines off before removing / inserting hardware).

You may need to set the jumpers on the old drive to slave first (which is easy to do - just ask me if you don't know how).

Then boot up your PC with the 2 drives in it, and explorer should now show 2 hard drives - probably C: (your regular hard drive) and E: or F: (your newly inserted 'from' drive).

Then it's a simple matter of dragging and dropping everything you want from the 'from' drive into the 'to' drive.

Once you've transferred everything, switch off and remove the old hard drive again.

Or, if you're lazy like me, you could just say sod it and leave both drives on the new pc.
Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

If you've got a router, just network both computers, and you can copy the files over to the shared folder on the new computer.

I do that, or else I use my USB drive and just copy and paste onto it, then copy and paste onto the destination computer from there.
