Senegalese impressions

Hey all,

As some of you know I'm in Senegal at the moment. The Dutchies have received a long letter in Dutch, that is maybe even too long to read through.

Let me keep it short. I just wanted to share with you how this experience has taught me to be glad I have access to food, electricity, Prince-music and the internet. The electricity for example is as expensive as in Belgium, about 50 euros a month. The main difference is that 50 euros is the average month's loan here.

I'm at the heart of the Senegalese community, as I'm visiting a friend from university who fell in love with a Senegalese man and had the strength and courage to start a life here, together with his two children. She works at the Belgian embassy and gains a high amount of money, in comparison with what others gain. Still it's hard for her to lead a simple life without decorations.

I've visited some of the poorest neighbourhoods in Dakar and St.Louis, in search for good projects to donate some money that was gathered in Belgium, and what strikes me the most is the hospitality with which people offer us tea and ask us to come into their house and share a plate of rice and fish.

I'm going to eat, and electricity may disappear any moment, so that's all for now. Big kisses to all my friends here.
