OMG I just had a scary experience!
I was out diving a wreck called the Betsy Anna today and had a chance in a million accident. We were on a wreck off the south coast of England that lays is 26m (about 90ft) of water. Its not a regularly dived so it does not have a buoy and line attatched to it. That means that when the skipper locates the wreck he sends a weight and line down so we can land ourselves on the wreck without any problems. In this case it was a 56lb lump of stainless steel with spikes welded to it.
He sent it down no problem and the plan was to attach a lift bag to it when all the divers were safely down and the boat would retrieve it. We descended fine and were on the bottom at 26.4m. All the divers were down so the last diver attached the lift bag and away she went……..or so we thought!!!

I was just about to fin off over the bow of the wreck when I was hit…..hard across the shoulders and neck. I drove me to the sea bed and tried to rip my regulator out of my mouth. At first I thought it was another diver and I tried to spin around but couldn’t. It turned out to be the stainless steel 56lb weight. I thought I was going to have to dump my gear and do an emergency ascent but my buddy grabbed the weight and held it while I took my regulator out of my mouth, climbed out of my gear and untangled it from me then re-rigged.

Fuck it scared me witless……we aborted the dive in case my gear was damaged and when I was back on board the skipper really put the wind up me when he said… “lucky it didn’t hit your head son it would have killed you”


Then I started shaking……….

Ah well all is safe now…diving the Kyarra tomorrow…..lets hope for a better day.
