Boy George hits the streets of NY! UPDATED WITH NEW PIC!

Boy George starts litter picking today

Singer Boy George has begun five days of sweeping streets in New York as part of a community service sentence.

The former Culture Club frontman, real name George O'Dowd, was threatened with jail earlier this year if he failed to complete the court-imposed sentence.

The 45-year-old was issued with a shovel, broom, plastic bags and gloves when he arrived for his shift, which is to last for eight hours each day.

O'Dowd has made light of the affair, joking he has "always been a scrubber".

However, he said he felt it would be "more useful" to stage a charity concert rather than spending his time "prancing around in a park".

'Media circus'

The community service order stems from an incident last October when O'Dowd called the police to his New York home.

A small amount of cocaine was found in the apartment and the singer was arrested.

The cocaine possession charge was dropped in March after O'Dowd pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of wasting police time.

In June, however, the singer was criticised by New York Judge Anthony Ferrara for failing to pay a $1,000 fine and perform his five days of community service.

The order has been criticised by the flamboyant performer's lawyer, who said the punishment would turn into "a media circus".

...waiting for the paparazzi to catch up with him... whistling

seriously, i hope he gets inundated with fans and well-wishers. i don't care how much of a career junkie he is, i think it's kinda degrading and uncool. of course, there's the part of me who also feels he should keep his damn nose clean if he doesn't want this kind of thing happening to him. shrug

That's how I feel. I adore the man (I gave him a dozen roses when Culture Club came to Detroit a few years back) but, I'm really pissed off at him for continuing to do this stuff.

i kinda wish the courts would treat him like a person with a sickness rather than as a person who should be humiliated. but i don't know. my inner bleeding heart liberal is at war with my inner right wing hardass about this kind of thing.

I have a funny feeling that this is going to turn into a weird come-back. I feel it in my gut. I've always loved Boy.

A lot of people don't realize what a beautiful voice he has. Most people refer to Karma Chameleon or Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. There are other great songs that he's done where his vocals are incredible.

"Victims" still kicks my butt. That, and most of his vocals on "Martyr Mantras".

Oh hell yes!! I SPECIALIZE IN LONLINESS is my theme song. I can't even describe how much I love that song. BOW DOWN MISTER is such a great song too.
