Parental Controls.....do you possess them?

This small excerpt from a news editorial got me to thinking.

Because of the highly sexualized and degrading lyrics in rap and contemporary R&B, one expects there to be a correlation between consumption of that music and early experiments with sex, and there is. It confirms our sense of intuition on this matter.

Parents....what gets filtered in your household?

My kids are only 1 and 3 and the music doesn't get filtered yet, although it probably should, since my little guy is quite the repeater reporter.

TV goes like this Nothing with an OUNCE of violence. I think its okay for some kids but for some its not. My son tends to be attracted to guns and swords and things of a violent nature and that worries me, so it's not allowed.

As far as bad language he's heard most of it already, repeated it, got horse radish in his mouth, never said it again, and moved on. lol

Mach

my kids grew up listening to Prince lol

we talk ...often

openly and honestly

sex isnt some evil bad taboo dark monster

it really is a beautiful sacred thing

i want my kids to have healthy outlooks on it and i think talking honestly to them about it will help ...

i bought our oldest daughter her 1st vibrator ... and suggested that she learn herself well and know what she likes BEFORE allowing a man to confuse her with not knowing how to please here ... and that she will need to teach her partners about what works for her

shrug

a few weeks ago we were walking out of the mall in front of a group of punkass teenagers... you know, the kind that think they're all tough and sh*t. rolleyes

i wasn't really paying attention to what they were saying, but they were swearing, like, every other word. the next day my three year old said "these pants are fucking funny."

eek

we had a nice little chat about naughty words! lol

Rhondab

My daughter is 15.

I don't filter as much as I did when was much younger. I didn't start parenting the kid a couple of years ago as some parents will wait until their child is 12 to start. We talk about EVERYTHING all the time. I let her listen to her music but we do talk about it especially if there's too many bitches and hoes for my taste, the song goes.

She's literally grown up with condoms all over the house, in my car, at work. She's seen the "woodies" we used for condom demos. Sex isn't taboo or odd or weird BUT its to be respected. Done wrong, it'll bite. lol

Instead of filtering or hiding things from kids, prents should be open and honest about them. The best way to get a kid to do something is to tell them not to do it. I'm not afraid to talk to my kids about anything. Better me than hearing stuff in the streets.

Filtering stuff at home does jack shit when they are exposed to stuff in the 'real world' everyday.

I totally agree but my one year old does not need to see uber violent cartoons and shit like that. Kinda hard to explain things to him at that age.

That's very true, I guess I mean at a more impressionable age.

I don't listen to the radio any more, just CDs, and no commercial TV for the kids - they can watch a G-rated dvd if they want. And ABC Kids, that's all. The rest is off limits. It bugs me when my son asks why Thomas in his class (who is 5) can watch the movie King Kong whenever he wants, that is way too much for a little kid to handle disbelief

yep, if it doesn't have the G in a green triangle it's not for kids, he accepts that, but wants to know why Thomas's mum lets him and I told him to ask her! Same when he wanted to know why his cousins can drink coke and he can't, I say ask their mum! He knows why HE is not allowed to nod
