Are you living the life you dreamed?

This was a tough question posed to me after i gave my players a rah rah rah motivational speech before a 4 mile run. After we got back, one of my players pulled me aside and was like coach, is this your dream? and i was like what do you mean. Hes like is this how you planned your life? WHich got me to thinking about Langston Hughes great poem "a dream defered" which I read when I got home. the more I thought about it i would have to say I am living out 90% of the dream. I always wanted to be a pro athlete, but so do most boys, but I got to play college ball, I'm still around sports cause I'm coaching, and I'm teaching. I always planned on coaching from a young age so thats fulfilled. The only things left are to get married, become an athletic director, have some kids and watch my grandkids graduate college. I'm sure more goals will come and I will shoot for them. But I can say that at 26 I am pretty much living the life I dreamed. I still have a little more to do, but I would be very contempt if I died right now knowing I'm at peace with God and myself. What about you are you living the life you dreamed?

OH u mean how is my life better than what i dreamed?

OK well when i was the dreamin kind i dreamed of being really rich and really famous a whole bucnh of totally programmed stuff and i dreamed of living in a big house made of the finest things and being in love with someone who knew all about every which way to make me happy!

MY LIFE IS BETTER THAN THAT because im far happier and more content and more FREE not being famous and not being rich because it made me appreciate all the very simple things in life andenabled me to hone in on what it is really like to fall in love with having VERY LITTLE and smell flowers and go out and be FREE and the love i have found in my son is better than someone just loving me wildly all the time becuz it teaches me patience and kindness and unconditional love it tests me every day and i much prefer it to being spoiled because being spoiled would make my spirit sluggish and complacent!

i love the very very small home i live in and i love every single bite of the very little very healthy food we eat and i love not knowing what to do with my money and i love it when suddenly i have lots of it for no reason and still dont know how to spend it! so i think of buying presents for my friends and i do! like yesterday i bought my mother some new suede cushions for her couch and i got my son a new cd player for his birthday and wrapped it in red shiny paper it looks like a big box of LOVE and i got him the super duper biggest card EVER and the whole experience was the HIGHLIGHT OF MY DAY!

i could go on.. biggrin

I'm not sure I really had 'dreams' about my life. I always just sort of went with the flow. I never really knew what I wanted to do. Still don't.
But I'm quite happy with my life. If I died tomorrow and had even a moment to reflect, I'd be content.

The fact that you are going with the flow, is in and off itself very dream like. glad you'd be happy. If you died today happy, usually is a good sign that you lived your life the way you wanted to...you lived the dream!

Not at the moment, no. I still live at home and am working two minimum wage jobs. I have no idea what I want to do with my life, I just feel like I haven't really done anything since I graduated high school. I briefly went to community college but decided the program I took wasn't for me at all. Graduating is supposed to be the beginning of a new chapter in life, but everything's the same now excpet that I don't have homework anymore.

What would I like to do with my life? All I know so far is that I want to travel as much as possible and to as many places as possible. I do travel a bit, but even with having been in Europe for a month and a half, after having been home for a month I'm already feeling stifled and restless. Trapped. I need to go somewhere, I know that much.

I know that 21 is young to be worried about being stuck in a rut, but it's a bit disconcerting to not have one friggin' clue what I want to do with my life.

. I need to go somewhere, I know that much.

If you can believe, you can achieve. As cliche and corny as that sounds its true. 21 for me was only 5 years ago, I graduated college at 22! So just think at this point in time at 26 you will be a different person. I find myself truly evolving once every 3 to 4 years.

Not even close, but you have to be ok with having your hopes and dreams crushed. That's life. lol

YEs it is life, but it seems to be a pessimisitic view, you can either accept failure as an option, or use failure as fuel. Failure and Fear are two things that fuel my fire, that keep me driven, that make me seek God, that make me attain goals, and that keeps me humble.

I have always been the same but current situations in mylife have forced me to take a look at what I want and what I need for my life.
That has been difficult for me.
It was much easier to drift through life and worry about everyone else's needs. I think a big part of why I never let myself dream of what I wanted is the fear of getting my hopes up and then not getting what I wanted.
Kind of explains why I never window shop....

totally can relate. I always wanted the "dream job" ... when i thought i found it .... i realized that --- hey ... it isnt the dream job after all !!!

I am doing some things i have dreamed OF ... but .... the $$$$$ part of the whole thing ... just isnt really working out the way i dreamed .... so .... at 40+ ... i would say .... no i am not living the life i dreamed .... yet ... confused

Even achieving a piece of the dream while giving it all you have is rewarding. At least you garnered a piece of the dream. I suggest you all read the Langston Hughes Poem "What happens to a dream deferred". Excellent, timely, philosophical, real life, inspirational!
