i think even if you make vegetarian meals every once in a while - like once or twice a week, even - you're doing more of a service to yourself than if you felt some kind of compulsion to include meat in EVERY meal all the time. while i'd love it if more people committed to a vegetarian diet, i'm not from the "all or nothing" school - if people started learning to cook vegetarian meals and realized that there's a lot of great tasting stuff they can make, i think there'd be less stigma attached to the subject.

biologically speaking, humans cannot exist one veggies alone. we're born with Incisors, designed to cut meat. We as humans need protein for muscle growth, for
hair growth, and other body processes. When I told my doctor many years back that we had cut meat out of our diets, he said, remember, we're not rabbits..you need to eat meat once in awhile.
that being said, an all protein diet isn't healthy either. You can actually go into a protein poisoning state
mix it up a bit.

i've been a vegetarian for 18 years. damn, i should be dead based on what you and your doctor say! omfg

maybe i'm UNdead, which explains why the guy at the gym doesn't like it when i'm there and the fan is on...my nasty decaying veggie flesh stink is blowing right in his face!

incisor inschmisor. we have the ability to reason. we have discretion. we have evolved decision-making skills that other animals don't have.

and there are so many things that are high in protein that are not meat, it's not even funny. the whole "you gotta have meat to have protein" thing was a scare tactic created by the meat industry. if someone tries to be a vegetarian and they're not getting any protein, it's probably because they're trying to replace meat with processed foods and junk food side dishes. you've got to really put effort into it to deny yourself protein.

have you thought about getting a different doctor? lol

indeed incisor shmisor...

you make out that were all crouching behind bushes ready to pounce out at mr.bunny snap his neck and RIIIIIP his neck open with our incisors.

you talk of nature-we are so far from nature-sat on our fat asses in front of a computer-gobbling down big macs and supping coke BUUUURRRP oh we need meat my doctor said or we'll die.

i think at the very least we have to address how we treat these other SENTIENT beings-it says much more about us than it does them.

so how many meateaters here actually kill their own animals?-come on its natural to us right?

we don't? confused many still do. even the dragging their mates by the hair.

in anycase, our ancestors did not eat THAT much meat and the meat that they did eat was free range, not squished into unsantitary barns and not allowed to move.

so comparing our current diet to those of a caveman/hunter-gatherer is pretty nonsensical. There were no McDonalds' in the stone age.

non-meat protein sources are many and varied. while it is true that the human mouth is designed to shed meat, we are not obligate carnivores like cats. Have you ever seen their incisors?!? It's insane!

The ideal human diet should contain 10% meat, which is far less then what most people eat, and if the proper adjustments are made, a vegetarian diet can be just as healthy.

Do you know the Mediterranean diet? I bet my blood test results beat those of 95% of the orgers here, including vegetarians and vegans.
And I never needed any vitamin pills or any kind of supplements in all my 40 years of life.

The fact I eat meat twice or three times a week doesn't mean I don't eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruit on a daily basis. And yes, I do grow a lot of what I eat. I grow oranges, peaches, pears, nectarines, grapes, melons... and also lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, marrows, potatoes...
You don't need a big surface for just a family.

So, do I think my diet is healthier? shake I KNOW IT nod

It's Summer here! smile

Gazpacho is a cold tomato-based soup and is a speciality of Andalucía, served in restaurants and bars.
In bars, it tends to be more liquid and is drunk from a glass whereas in restaurants it is normally served in a bowl with a garnish of chopped vegetables. Depending on who makes it, it can vary from a watered-down orange liquid without much taste to a deliciously refreshing drink.
The important thing is to chill it thoroughly before serving. Some people add ice but this tends to water it down too much.

INGREDIENTS:

1½ kg red tomatoes, peeled and roughly chopped

1 small onion, chopped

1 green pepper, chopped

2 - 3 cloves garlic

1 small cucumber (or half a long cucumber), chopped

1 small bread roll, soaked in water

olive oil

white wine vinegar (optional)

salt

water

RECIPE:

There are two ways of preparing gazpacho: you can either use an electric food processor/blender and then pass it through a sieve, or you can use a food mill (a mouli). The important thing is to get rid of all the pips, skins, etc.

First, blend and sieve, or mill, all the vegetables into a large bowl. Then squeeze the water out of the bread roll and add to the tomato/vegetable mixture. Add two tablespoons of olive oil and a tablespoon of vinegar. Season with salt and blend well. Check the taste and add as much water as necessary depending on whether you will be drinking or eating it with a spoon. Chill thoroughly before serving. If you are using bowls, finely chop some cucumber, green pepper, tomato, and fried bread cubes to use for the garnish.

Come on! DRINK!!!

ok, well, you're bragging about having a healthy diet because you keep your meat consumption to a minimum and you grow your own fruits and vegetables? that's great!

like i said before, i think if people include vegetarian meals in their diet but still consider themselves omnivorous, it beats a diet in which someone feels the need to include meat in every meal.

believe it or not, some people maintain healthy diets because they like the results, not because it's the trendy thing to do.

i love it when people tease me about my vegetarianism being a "trend", especially after i tell them i've been on this "trend" for 18 years now. smile
