Dude, my bartenders fuckin looooove me.

I tip well all around. But if they are taking care of me, once i'm tipsy enough that I no longer care about money they get at least one nice fat tip on top of the standard appropriate tips....

It pays to pay too. It helps ensure that you get quick service and stiff drinks nod

Exactly. You tip well and are treated well in return. nod

with all due respect to everyone's opinion, isn't that backward?..if you are treated well, you tip well?....I understand CarrieLee's reliance on tips, but tips
are for an appreciation of exceptional service. I do agree, that 25 cents is a nasty thing for someone to do, and i do tip my bartenders and food servers well, but if a bartender takes my order, makes my drink and I can't taste the vodka, Im not going to consider that exceptional service. Also, eye contact would be nice wouldn't it? make me feel like the bartender knows Im a person.
I understand in a crowded busy noisy bar, that might not happen all the time, but it would be nice if I was made to feel that Im more then just a hand waiting for a glass to be put in it.

Seriously people. We make money off tips, not on our hourly wage which is like $2.63 an hour...at least in RI/MA.

When you leave 25 cents that's left over from the price of your beer I'm gonna throw it back at you and the next time you want something you're gonna have to wait...a long fucking time!

People are so cheap. We're not asking for $5 tips but a buck or two on a round is expected.

Rant over time to smoke my cheebah.

I tip 2 bucks per drink. If I buy a round of like 5 drinks, especially if they're all cocktails and martinis, then I'm leaving a $10 tip.

Tipping isn't some little suprise gift you give your bartender or server, it's a service fee that's expected.

Restaurants could include it in the price, but in the US, they don't. That way it makes their menu prices look less expensive, and gives the server more of an incentive to do a better job.

Don't kid yourself if a server makes alot of money on one night, because there are plenty of nights where they work 8 hours and get completely screwed on tips as well. Also, in restauraunts, the servers are sometimes requires to give part of their tips to the bussers, food runners, and bartenders.

When I worked at TGI Fridays as a server, we were required to give a certain portion of our tips to the bartenders and bussers, it was based on a percentage of our total sales from the day.

Also, even after the night was over and we were off the floor, we had other closing and sidework we had to do that would take another hour or two, and we were only getting paid that $2.something per hour for it.

that part I would resent, if I worked at tgif's. I can see turning something over to the bussers, they bust their butts, but dayum....

Some restaurants will automatically include a gratuity if it's a large party of like 8 or more. This is to keep the server from getting screwed, and believe me, it happens. You wait on a 10 top, and they all get seperate checks, and they all want to skip out without leaving a tip because they figure everyone else is leaving one. They'll sit in your section for like 2 hours and chit chat, long after they're done eating and you won't make crap for the night. The server is required to include this gratuity unless you ask them not to, otherwise the restaurant can get in trouble for discrimination.

Well the bartenders are making all of your drinks as well, they work for tips too. If my table ordered 2 manhattans, a strawberry daquiri, and a long island, to go with their food, the bartender has to make them all.

From now on I am asking for tips for my posts.

When people think I say something funny, instead of an emoticon, I want a tip.

Breakdown:

If you were going to type --> smile that's 10%

--> lol = 15%

--> falloff = 20%

It's my lifeline, peeps! Tip generously! It's hard out there for a 9s!

rolleyes
falloff falloff

--> rolleyes = You owe me 50 bucks.

gulp...i think maybe money talks alot more in america-gestures are defined fiscally-just different cultures-a genuine thankyou is priceless isnt it?

a genuine thank you is great but it ain't gonna pay the rent.

a conscientious traveller learns the ettiquettes of the places he or she is travelling in. these can be physical acts and gestures or these ettiquettes may be fiscal. being from "out of town" is no excuse...when in rome, baby.

to those of you who take the position, "well, i didn't tell you to take a job that requires tipping," all i have to say is if it weren't for those of us bringing you your beer or serving your plate to you, your ass would be home getting it yourself. stop looking for a reason to be cheap.

when you go out to eat you need to consider the fact that you'll have to leave a 15% tip (at minimum, higher tip for higher service). just factor that into the cost of a night out right off the bat. and yes, please tip on the wine and tax. its not your server's fault that you bought a $70 dollar bottle of wine.

if you don't want to tip you better be the first person in line pushing for a higher minimum wage for servers. if not, serve yourself and stay home. servers actually pay their taxes based on their nightly sales. if you don't tip your server, they actually PAY TO SERVE YOU. most servers' paycheck are for $0. that's right, after taxes are deducted from the 2.65 an hour paycheck, most servers have an empty check. don't dick them over.

and rachel ray sucks homeless ass. she leaves less than a dollar. bitch includes "tips and tax" as the same thing and the shit is always less than a buck.

i look at tipping as MY CHOICE. i don't care if people expect it or not.
your tip or lack there of depends on your service. and i've worked many years in an industry where tipping was an option. but never once did i expect or demand it. let alone get upset if someone chose not to.

and check your bill at the end of meals at resaurants; some add it in automatically. if you choose a job where you'll be depending on tips, then u know what you're getting into. i will not feel obligated to tip anyone simply because it's expected. it's YOUR JOB to be a server. those who go out of their way, do something extra, or simply a hard worker...sure. i don't mind leaving a tip and always do.

and i think it's disgusting that people have to feel there'll be a retaliation if no tip is left. maybe that was your tip. get another job or change your attitude. i've worked with many people who go out of their way, do the little extra things to make people happy, mke something a bit more special, etc.. and they enjoy it. it's their job. not some alien concept. and never complain about tips. saying thank you is enough. there's a tip. if i ask for something that may take more time or different than what's being offere. absolutely! tipping shouldbe expected.

as far as the bar scene, i'm not sure what the appropriate rate is for tipping a bartender, as i don't drink. biggrin i usually get a cranberry juice, straight giggle and i'll leave at least a dollar. in that environment, most of them have to hustle, remember every drink, and from what i've seen are working hard. so i feel the ones that do, they deserve one. biggrin

I think I'm a great bartender. I'm friendly to everyone, I love my job and I know it shows. I have fun doing it, I'm a generous pourer and I'll remember what you order so the next time you come up to the bar it'll be there for you. I try to make your trip to the bar a fun time, cuz I want you to come back!

These people that leave no tips are the ones who order expensive drinks and they are the same people over and over. I'd rather not be tipped at all then have you leave a quarter for me. It's insulting.
