People are so cheap. We're not asking for $5 tips but a buck or two on a round is expected..

You better not come at me with that attitude, or I will go out of my way to flag down your co-worker and tip her/him with $20 bills each round! flip u

Just kiddin'.. but seriously, treat people well, they will treat you well in return. They come there to relax and enjoy themselves after THEY HAVE WORKED ALL DAY themselves.

A new system during big events in Amsterdam has the bars distributing plastic beer glasses, for which you pay one euro and that you can re-use.

Deal is that when you return the glass, you get your euro back. Yesterday, poor boy Isten got cheated out of two euro by a bitchy barman that refused to give him his two euro back. The barguy probably thought Isten was not from Holland and thought he could make an easy buck.

Isten was SO perplexed, he let the barguy get away with it. I just walked up to the guy in front of his colleagues and gave him a lesson. He shrunk to mini-me size during the process.

Bitch did not get ONE cent. I think tipping should be according to service.

God I'm glad we don't have tipping here...in my opinion people should get paid a decent wage ..and not have to rely on tipping at all .....

Carrie, did someone really leave you a quarter? That's super fucked.

standard rule is a buck a drink, if the bartender is kicking ass, like, remembering what I want and taking care of me as soon as I go back, then when I leave I'll give him/her a little something more on my last drink, it's only right, you know?

people are lousy, you should have spit in his drink.

America is a neo-liberal captilist tour de force. Many states allow Tips to be factored into actual income thereby not having to pay minimum wage. And there is no state in the Union where minimum wage is actually a living wage.

So tips really matter here.

I've never had to buy a drink at a bar so I don't know much about tipping bartenders. When I'm in restaurants in America I tip 15%-20%. When I'm outside of America, I get confused and let other people handle it.

What pisses me off is when people expect a tip for services that I didn't even ask for. One time when I was at the supermarket, one of the workers offered to carry my bags to the car. I repeatedly said no because I can carry my own bags, I'm not some kind of weakling. But this person kept on insisting and finally just took my bags and started walking out to the parking lot. So we get to my car and put the bags in and then when we were done I just said, "Thank you" and went on my way. I didn't want this service and I didn't ask for this service AND the service was more of an inconvience than anything else. So no tip. hmph!

but the person expected a tip. and that just made me mad.

From now on I am asking for tips for my posts.

When people think I say something funny, instead of an emoticon, I want a tip.

Breakdown:

If you were going to type --> smile that's 10%

--> lol = 15%

--> falloff = 20%

It's my lifeline, peeps! Tip generously! It's hard out there for a 9s!

I'm in agreement. But it's just not something that can change overnight. It's ingrained in both the culture and economy. And for the most part, works well.

People always pay for the wages of people that provide a service to them. It's just not in the form of a tip. It's just part of the bill.

I do not understand how tipping as a major part of your income is acceptable either. It doesn't make sense at all. You already pay for your service when you pay your bill. The prices are incredibly inflated so that the company can make a profit, but unlike most companies they do not have to factor in decent wages for their employees. It's terrible and this practice should be abolished. These kinds of businesses that do this are making big profits while the customer has to pay more and the employees have to make less.

But with that said, I always tip...unless the server was horrible.

I can't believe that minimum wage is under $3 where you live Carrie! That's awful!!

US minium wage is about $5.15. Some states have raised that within the state. But workers in the service industry can be paid less than minimum wage as their wage is supplemented in tips. They must report their tips as taxable income. I believe there is a law on the books that if you can prove that with your tips you received less than the stats or federal minimum wage for a week, your employer must pay you out the difference, but minimum wage itself is not even a livable standard in the US. And the goal isn't to get up to minimum wage, but many times over. If you're working in a busy, expensive restaurant, you can make damn good money. We tip well, yes we do. But it can also be hell and your income is dependent on how business goes.

Dude, my bartenders fuckin looooove me.

I tip well all around. But if they are taking care of me, once i'm tipsy enough that I no longer care about money they get at least one nice fat tip on top of the standard appropriate tips....

It pays to pay too. It helps ensure that you get quick service and stiff drinks nod

In Rhode Island and Massachusetts, I think that the minimum wage is somewhere around $6.75/hr. But for bartenders and waiters, it's $2/hr. If Carrie was working at McDonalds, then she would probably be getting $6.75/hr but because she's working at an establishment where she gets tipped, those tips get counted as a part of her hourly wage. It's real bullshit how they screw over servers in that way.
