One soda a day = 15 pounds a year!

From the NY Daily News:

Soda x 365 days = 15 pounds

By Jordan Lite
Daily News Staff Writer

Drinking just one soda a day could pack on an extra 15 pounds a year, a new study says.

"[The facts] will scare a lot of people. The small amount of calories do add up," said Frank Hu, associate professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health and the head of the study, published today in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Soft drinks - such as nondiet sodas, sweetened fruit drinks and iced teas - account for nearly half of the added sugars in Americans' diets, according to Hu's analysis of 30 studies conducted since 1966.

The sugary drinks are driving the explosion in obesity, the study said, with nearly 130 million Americans now overweight.

These beverages aren't the only culprits, said syndicated columnist Charles Platkin, also known as the Diet Detective.

Think starting your day with a multigrain bagel is healthy? Not so much: it'll move the needle on your scale ahead by 40 pounds come Christmas.

And the jolt from your afternoon frappuccino translates into another 14-1/2 pounds of padding per year.

The extra weight comes when people don't expend as much energy as the calories they are taking in, Hu said.

"The difference between what your budget is and what you exceed it by is what can add up into these unwanted pounds," Platkin said.

I don't drink sodas too much anymore. Every now and then I'll get one if it's a new kind out that I really wanna try like that Dr. Pepper Berries and Cream. Soda is what led to my brother's diabetes. I mean it runs in the family, but he'd drink several a day on top of a poor diet....which didn't help the situation. I stopped drinking them on a regular basis because I get bladder infections and UTI's if I drink them a lot.

once i got used to the little bit of difference i COULD tell in those sodas, i tried diet coke and i was fine with it. nod

now i can't see how anyone drinks regular soda, cuz it tastes like liquid rock candy to me. ill

well, if you just need something fizzy, there's also mixing sparkling water with cranberry or pomegranate juice. that's pretty yummy too, and a bit lower in calories.

I just need to cut out the sugar.
I use organic unprocessed and unbleached sugar in my coffee and when I cook or bake.

Soda was all that was ever offered in college and I got so sick of it, I eventually quit cold turkey. That was over 15 years ago.
