Heath Ledger to Play The Joker in Batman Sequel

He seems so shy, self concious and soft spoken, and the Joker is such an over the top character. It will be interesting to see him play that.

I'll reserve judgement till I see his performance, but my initial reaction is it's poor casting.

there's three threads on this, since this one seems to have the most discussion, I'm gonna lock up the other two.

It's funny you say he seems shy and self-conscious. This might work, especially if it shows plenty of Jack Napier before he became The Joker.
In one of the comic book continuity lines, Jack Napier was a poor stand-up comedian with a wife and baby on the way. They didn't have enough money to support themselves, and he was failing on the stand-up front. He was sort of bullied into going on the heist that would lead to the trauma that helps turn him into the Joker. So this Ledger guy may do well at showing the transformation of Jack Napier to the Joker.

I doubt they'll even show Jack, seeing as how Joker is already committing crimes based on the end of "Batman Begins" It just doesn't make sense to me, but I guess I could be wrong.

I would have preferred Hugo Weaving or Crispin Glover, but I have faith in Chris Nolan.

He was sort of bullied into going on the heist that would lead to the trauma that helps turn him into the Joker. So this Ledger guy may do well at showing the transformation of Jack Napier to the Joker. He was never known as Jack Napier in the comic. He was an unknown comedian. The name "Jack Napier" was created for the Burton film, and subsequently used on the animated series. It was, only recently, revealed in the comics that the comedian character's name was "Jack" (and this was done as a nod to the film). Beyond that, the Joker's actual identity is unknown. Still, you're right about his origin, and I'd like to see that played up in the film, rather than the concept of him as a seasoned criminal that Burton's film depicted. To me, it should be clear that the Joker is the result of a tragedy, and going insane is how he dealt with it. He should be the opposite of Batman in every way. I haven't seen enough of Ledger's performances to make any judgements on his acting abilities, but I do have faith in Nolan. By the way, I must say that the title, Batman: The Dark Knight, is great! About time! Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Bats is crazy too!! Batman deals with his pain by training to be a force to fight evil. He is disciplined in the extreme, and methodical with his skills as a detective. He is a grim figure, preying on the fears of criminals The Joker is complete chaos, and absolute evil. He is completely undisciplined, and his schemes are often as hair-brained as they are twisted. He is a colorful character, using the concept of the loveable clown to prey on the unsuspecting. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

i love seeing crispy in ANYTHING, but i think he's gone way too far out of orbit for a role like this. maybe if they wrote it with batman as the villain and the joker as the hero...

He's always been my choice, since he's pretty much The Joker in real life. Still, as I understand it, the guy has gotten a reputation for being impossible to work with, so I wasn't expecting him to get it.
