I go back and forth. I'll be all veggie for like 6 mos-a year. Then I'll get these INTENSE cravings for MEAT!!

Lately I've been craving all veggies so I guess I'll go back to vegetarianism for awhile.

I pretty much just listen to my body. When I have that strong craving I'll follow it, but not over do it.

My sister had stomach surgery, and cannot have meat or dairy anymore- doctor's orders. At first it was hard, but she's adjusted. People can be insensitive when we're out and she orders something without meat. One waiter asked, "No meat?" She said, "No, I can't have it". He replied, "Who did THAT to U?"
Nice, huh? neutral

I, on the other hand, wouldn't mind giving it up, but I'm allergic to beans and nuts (incl. soy), so I wouldn't get enough protein. I only eat poultry & fish, tho. sigh

I just don't like when people get all "preachy". If U choose to, missmad, go 4 it... thumbs up!

I've been mostly veggie for quite a while now. I haven't gone all out and committed myself, but I only eat any kind of meat maybe once every other week or so. I almost find it hard to eat now. lol.

Missmad ~ here are just a few thoughts that may help you with your decision. You say you aren't sure why you are thinking of this. I believe that you already have some strong feelings about it ~ it is important to be focused and aware ~ for one thing, people will constantly ask you why you are doing it.It can also be difficult in most societies and there are times when it becomes very frustrating. Being at peace and firmily resolved in your mind about why you feel this is the right choice for you will help through the rough spots. The "rules" are really what you want to make them. Eating out can be very tricky ~ a restaurant (even Burger King now) may offer a veggie burger, but are they cooked on a "dedicated" grill (where only meat free foods are cooked). If you want to be thorough, you need to watch for things like vegetable soups (often beef or chicken broth base), spanish rice (same), many pasta sauces, and things like cheese sticks or fries cooked in animal fat or in the same fryer with meats. Gelatin is an animal by~product that shows up in all kinds of things ~ Jello, cheesecake, yogurt, marshmallows ~ many things that need a thickener.
Study nutrition, ask vegetarian friends, read labels, listen to your body. Some studies are suggesting that too much soy protien can cause breast cancer (my paranoid side wonders if the meat industry sponsored the research lol) and soy, nuts and too much fruit can cause stomach distress. Many people ask me what I can and can't eat. I try to tell them, without being preachy, that I really can eat anything ~ it is what I choose to eat or not. I live in quite a rural area and it gets tiresome to eat at restaurants that serve fettucine alfredo and salad as their only vegetarian dishes. I often order from the appetizer menu and get a great meal. And, even though I order dishes without the steak, chicken or shrimp, they will never reduce the price which is a little annoying.
This got a bit longer than I had intended, but there are many veteran vegetarians here who can offer more help ~ anx, bananacologne and irrisitable come to mind right away. Good luck to you and let us know how it goes!

I take it you'll never visit over there again ... what a dumbbag .
I hope whenever that happens to you and your sister another time , that you 2 make an immediate complaint to the director of the restaurant .
Or another devish-back@cha by making your orders and leave after the idiot went to the kitchen evillol

As far as examining labels in shops or on websites , i can get to that .
The Burger King example ? I'm sorry and with all respect , but in that case i would suggest to take a full salad which they serve nowadays at some of their units . I don't want that foodcontrol is going to force my eat decisions in life.
There are times that you have to be able to relax and not constantly have to stress about what you're eating . In a restaurant it might be easier to make your decision for a vegeterian meal than if you're invited to a friends dinner .
Although it depends of how close you are with that group of friends that they will take notice that you're a vegetarian . I guess it's a little more complicated when you're visiting lesser close relatives . Then again i could be wrong , like i said it depends on the relationship ( as you're explaining below )
I'm not entirely directed to veggie alone , cause any now and then i buy some fish around the corner and mix it with a mix of italian pasta , corn , avocado , tomatoes , kidneybeans or an oriental rice with healthier ingredients than the plain white rice .

It's not that...
I just don't like when people try to make others feel bad for their choices- like eating a turkey sandwich or a steak dinner or whatever. I'm not denying that those poor animals suffer, but someone is about to eat, it's not the time to bring it up- at the table. I've known people who do that.
