Australian Census: What religion are you???

Found this over at www.theforce.net :

For the 15th time since Federation the every man, woman and child will be counted in the 2006 Australian Census and this time you can do it on the internet. But how does this relate to Star Wars you might ask? Last time some 70,000 people put down "Jedi" as their religion in an effort to get it officially recognized. Let's see if we can do better this time round come 8th August 2006.

Plenty of people tried to put the scare into people saying "You'll be tracked down and fined for giving false information"...WRONG (Read more here). If you have no real religion yourself but you're a HUGE Star Wars fan, or if you are a follower of the Jedi Faith this is your chance to be heard. Wookiees may not exist, lightsabers may not be real (yet) but do you believe in a UNIVERSAL FORCE?!?!

On the question of religion, VOTE JEDI. Put down "Jedi" on their census form. And remember, if you are a member of the Jedi religion then you are by default a 'Jedi Knight'. So If this has been your dream since you were 4 years old. Do it cos you love Star Wars. Tell all your Star Wars friends to join the coolest religion this side of the outer rim.

REMEMBER ... VOTE JEDI ... BECOME A CENSUS KNIGHT!

If they dared to send me one of those census things I'd send a big finger back. Registering people's private information reminds me of Stalin-era Soviet Union or the McCarthy-era USA. disbelief

Every time there's a census in some country this old myth reappears.

And that's all it is, a myth.

Pity, really.

nod It really does. I think it would be great if Jediism became the world's most popular religion.

Sadly, no. Although, I guess it depends on your point of view. If people believe themselves to be Jedi Knights and say it is their official belief system, then in my book that makes it a religion, but it still doesn't count officially.

I remember last time this rumour surfaced I read something about the criteria required for a religion to be counted as 'official' in various countries. I did a search but can't find it now.

There can't be more than a few thousand people in Australia. How hard could it be?

well it takes the census lady a few weeks to drop off all the forms - she said she would be back to pick it up before Sept 9th. Lucky she only has to do it every 5 years

Well, if you're a Jedi, and you pay to see one of the films in a cinema, or to rent it on dvd, wouldn't that count as going to church, and as some of the ticket price / rental charge goes to Lucasfilms, I guess that makes Lucasfilms the collection plate.

Let us pray. Our Yoda, who art on film, confused be thy speech.....

I still haven't found that thing stating the criteria necessary to be an official religion, but I have found out that most countries do have one official state religion aside from those which are pluralist (recognize any and all religions and beliefs) and secular (do not profess any state religion and attempt to treat all religions equally).

http://en.wikipedia.org/w..._religions

Australia is listed as secular, so I guess there must be some method by which Jediism could be officially recognised there. Using the census would seem to be the most logical way of doing it, but it would probably require all Jedi Knights to march on Canberra demanding official recognition.

I once put as my religion "Church of Bollocks" and no-one asked any questions. So why not Jedi?
