The river flows due north. You can hike on the escarpment but it isn't a good idea unless you're very experienced. People have to be rescued by the jet boat or the helicopters all the time. That's only about one third of the water from the river going over. The rest goes to a power plant. We supply a LOT of the electricity for the northeast US and Canada. "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"-Dr Seuss

I can only imagine what it used to look like. I hear they can literally turn it on & off like a faucet, and there are agreements with the tourist industry about turning the flow up during the day & during tourist season. Still, one of the most amazing things I've seen in person. My Legacy

What is winter like? Beautiful pictures. Thank you...[/quote] I can only tell you what it is for me: Winter is a time of darkness but when there's snow, it's never really dark. It's air so cold and crisp it crinkles your nose and if you are quiet enough you can hear the telephone wires hum. It's laughter and racing down hills on sleds and skis and gliding across frozen ponds on skates. It's snow angels, snowmen and snow forts. It's snowball fights, getting your face washed with snow and having snow put down your back. It's children's runny noses to be wiped and mittens to be dried by the heater. It's dogs grabbing quick bites of snow on their walks and cats sitting in windows trying to catch snowflakes outside. It's neighbors helping each other, shoveling, cleaning off cars., making sure the family with the young children have milk and bread, taking a hot meal to the retired people across the street. It's long evenings with family and friends... or quiet evenings with a good book. It's watching the days grow shorter and then miraculously longer again. Anyway, that's what it is to me. [Edited 7/27/06 19:34pm] Yeah, I think the winter must have been bad & lasted a long time that year. I drove across the country that year, and it rained almost everywhere from the end of May to the beginning of June. Made it tough to camp! Yellowstone & Yosemite had snow on the ground in higher elevations. My Legacy
