confusion: COW/SOY/RICE milk; FULL/LOW/NON fat... WTF?? After a conversation w/ a friend who's studying to be a medical tech, she shared some things she learned in her class. Now I'm trying to do some research on a few things & after poking around on the web I wanna hear from my Org folks on this...
I thought (eventhough some of you probably already told me otherwise, lol) I was doing the right things by eating low-fat this, non-fat that. But I'm wondering if I'm just slowly killing myself in another way with all the processing & SHIT they pump into the low/no fat products? I've dropped 2 pounds since my "weight loss" thread but that's b/c I've cut back to ONE 8 ounce glass of juice per day (versus the 20+ ounces I used to drink on a regular basis) & virtually no regular sweets (brownies & cakes & shit), that stuff was KILLING my workouts With about 5 pounds to go I don't really wanna deviate from my lowfat/no fat items right now b/c I'm afraid to slow down my progress Those Weight Watchers snack cakes are my fucking lifeline But if I switch to less processed/more fatty stuff once I'm @ the point of maintenance, will I be able to maintain??? Does anyone have an opinion on the following notions:
My head is twisted but I guess it just depends on what the goal is. Right now my goal is fat loss - maybe I can switch to more organic (TRULY organic) alternatives once I get to where I want to simply maintain (though I hear Silk Soy Milk IS organic, the shit makes me batty ). And no matter what I will NOT be making almond milk up in this mutha!! 'cause that's supposed to be the healthiest Help this broad out if you can... . [Edited 7/31/06 3:54am]

No, but I did have to revise that "statement", I was getting things a bit mixed up. Basically she was telling me that she learned soy milk is difficult for our bodies to digest but I can't remember her whole schpiel (sp?) on it I'm basically talking out of my ass Anx Yet still searching for feedback on said "ass talking"

Before I start I'd better point out that I am just guessing here....
I thought that Soy milk was good for you as it helps prevent forms of cancer such as breast cancer and this theory is based on the low level of breast cancer in Japan due to their high intake of soy based products. Anyone know anything about this? I drink soy milk like it's going out of fashion!

Actually here's one link I found earlier but I have no clue who Dr. Ben Kim really is He's against Soy & Rice milk b/c: "Many brands of soy and rice milk contain polyunsaturated vegetable oils which can contribute to an imbalance of essential fatty acids in your body." He mentions other stuff that's supposed to be bad about both... http://chetday.com/soymilk.htm

Yea, who knows what her teachers' school of thought is on it all. It bugged me out though & sent me searching - most of what I found about soy IS positive... Perhaps she's just trying to ruin the contents of my fridge She better not have stock in Rice Dream So, how long before my tail sprouts??

Well, I don't know about the light Milk/Cheese thing (my guess is the full milk has the most good elements, but also the most fat (which isn't necessarily bad, btw)). What I do know is that light soda-drinks are evil to the bone. Not only do they taste awful, the artificial sweetener in it is rather dangerous. I'd say stick to the (unsweetened) orange juice, and the kind of milk you prefer (and your body digests, I have difficulties digesting cow milk, so ...). Actually, Soy Milk contains an estrogen pre-curser, which naturally occurs in Soy beans--not an artitifial additive. This explains why Anx has man boobs. Also, 25-30% of people cannot digest soy milk well. Rice Milk is by far the best of the products, though I switch between Soy and Rice Milk becuase Soy is easier to get where I live. Cow's Milk is discusting. The mucus that is in the milk wreaks havoc on your digestive system, causing your body to product it's own mucus, and eventually it spills into your bloodstream. This cuases decongestive problems, and you could even get sinus problems becuase of this. Moreover, the American dairy industry is cruel. To keep cows producing milk at optimum levels, cows are kept pregnant. Once they have thier calves, the calf is immediately taken away from the mother, causes extreme distress to both (it's heart breaking). If the calf is a male, it is shut in a small cell where it cannot move or walk, and is fed a diluted mixture to keep it's muscles weak and tender. Most calve go mad from lack of stimulation. They are then slaughtered for viel. Drink Rice or Soy.

Whole cows milk contains more fat than other milks, just get basic semi skimmed or skimmed milk. They SHOULD be just that, ie milk with the fat literally skimmed off. They shouldn't contain any additives. However you do loose some fat soluble vitamins in the bit they remove.
Soy milk can be a good accompaniment, I don't personally drink it because it contains a lot of phytoestrogens and we don't really know what effect they might have on fertility etc at the moment. (this is why they have been linked to cancer prevention BTW). Rice milk - I don't know anything about this of the top of my head. Low fat cheeses: just read the packaging as I would say that this depends a lot on the cheese and brand. If in doubt just by a nice full flavoured "real" cheese (this is hard enough in the US anyway) and eat only a small amount of it. Congrats on the weight loss so far though keep it up Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

I use soy milk for cereal and baking but don't drink it straight altho some of the chocolate brands are pretty good. When I want a break I use rice milk or a combination of rice and soy. But some brands of soy have sugar and other ingredients that I don't really find necessary. Also some frown on soy because it can coagulate in your stomach--if you've had a container too long see how it gets clumpy at the bottom. Rice milk doesn't do that.
Goat's milk is the closest to human milk is easier to digest than cow's. You can get the benefits of soy milk from soy beans or tofu. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Calhoun, have you considered juicing fruits and vegetables instead of drinking sodas?
My understanding of juicing -- especially if used as a fast -- is that it even cleanses the body on a cellular level! I think I'm going to try this, this week!

Does anyone have an opinion on the following notions:
Whole cows milk is better than low fat & non fat cows milk b/c it undergoes less processing, has less additives & more nutrients. ONLY consume Organic if you must consume cows milk Soy milk is dangerous b/c our bodies don't digest it well. I have read that only fermented soy products are human body friendly ... dont know much more Rice milk is the best milk to drink. Low fat & Non fat cheeses are worse for your body than regular cheese b/c they undergo more processing & contain lots of additives.ONLY consume organic cheese
