HELP MickG Out here.

Okay friends, family and all. I've been thinking of buying a drum set. It's a investment. I've been thinking of getting one for a long time, but I am now in the place and time where I could have one. Yet I worry that my desire will not match up with my drive. I'm worried I will buy the drum set and before to long it will become another expence that ends up being a dust collector.

For example: if you are not aware I play guitar. I'm "not bad" though I could be alot better if I would pick up the guitar more often rather then typing away. I find a little bit of disapointment in myself that I don't really ENJOY playing guitar. However I find pleasure that if I feel I have something to say I can write a song and play a harmony. I do with I would "get into it" a little deeper.

This is the feared end result of the drumkit.

So knowing this, should I get me a drum kit?

Get it.

From there you can control what you do with it next. It's going to be eating at you for a while unless you do, c'mon... you know you're gonna end up getting it, might as well be now. biggrin

Sure, get it if you want to. Maybe you'll find out you love drumming.
If you hate it, or just aren't interested in playing you can always sell them.

You'll never know if you don't do it. biggrin

With all those boys, the drums wouldn't be collecting dust for long. biggrin

But playing the instruments can be very satisfying. You should try the drums. nod

It's better them possible ending up being dust-collectors (btw there's ebay for that) than you always regretting that you didn't give it a shot.

awwwww....but the little ones are so cute when you give them instruments to play - put on a Prince cd and let them know they make beautiful music that inspires you to dance! A six pack makes it really a blast!

Here's the thing...do you have a wife or anyone that would be bothered by your drums? You may want to take that into consideration. It would suck to buy them only to find out that your neighbors or lovely wife isn't digging your beats (and for the first year or 2 or 3...it going to sound ANNOYING)

That aside, I get what you are saying. I too have bought things (musical programs...expensive) only to no tuse them like I had intended. You can always sell your instuments if you don't use them. I think you should get a kit if you are willing to at least dedicate a year to practice. If you don't have the drive to dedicate that amount of time, I'd say don't get them.

Another question, are you getting them to get them...or are you going to do something other than bang away? Like if you like them and are good enough..try to form a band.

Yes but with good ones, you can record your instruments and make music without leaving your own home.

You can always get those electronic drums that have earphones for the player to listen to themselves and no one else can hear. Or those quiet drum heads for practice.

In my opinion, yes..... and if u get tired of it, I will b interested in buying it 4 myself.
wink
I play more than 1 instrument so its normal that certain periods I enjoy playing piano more than guitar.... (happening now..Im not willing 2 practice with classical one. I just play electric guitar 4 my music in Studio). These days I feel more attracted by piano and percussions than by guitar....

...Just do what u feel... razz

No drum kit shouldn't affect neighbors at all, I live in a stand alone home. Though I am worried about anoying my wife. smile

something like drum pads won't do because there's a "fun" element that would make me want to play a real set.

I dunno, I used to have drums and my neighbors could hear them down the block. I could hear my neighbor playing his, too, about 10 houses down.

Drums are really fun, though. They're more intuitive than any other instrument (except voice). I found I was able to play them right away, though not well, just from air drumming & playing rhythms on my knees all my life.

I have to wonder, though, since you said you don't really enjoy playing the guitar, why do you think you'd enjoy drums?

There's just something inside me.

And, well maybe I wasn't clear enough when I stated I don't really enjoy playing guitar. What I meant was that I don't enjoy picking the guitar up and playing it for enjoyment, as in a pratice mode. I do however enjoy playing the guitar when I've something to say or something in my mind to play.

Animal was always my favorite Muppet!

I would never discourage musical instruments, I have a bunch myself. It bothers me when I go to a house that doesn't have any.

I noticed you also said you don't play well with others. For a long time I didn't regularly play with others, but now it's the best part, other than maybe writing songs.

If you pick up the drums and become even halfway decent, you're going to be very popular with the other musicians.

It isn't that I can not follow along, playing, while others play. I can do that well enough. I meant, I'm a strange bird. I can't stand egosentric people who think thier shit is gold even know it's not all that. If your shit is truly gold then you have the right to be egosentric, but if you are just doing it to cover some insecurity charactor flaw, that's not cool.

That part doesn't make you a strange bird. Those are the same reasons it took me so long to find a band. Too many "uncompromising artists" who'd never get anywhere because they wouldn't compromise. People think they can act like superstars before they've done anything at all.

But when you do find a decent group of people who aren't so uptight, but just want to play a bit, it's great fun.

I did, but I had to compromise a bit, too.
