INDIAN ARMY SAVES PRINCE!

Sunday, July 23, 2006 (Kurukshetra):

A six-year-old boy, trapped for 50 hours in a borewell in Kurukshetra, was rescued by the Army personnel.

The boy, Prince, slipped into the well on Friday while playing near it.

At 7 pm on Sunday, the Army began its final manoeuvre to bring him out. The Haryana chief minister was also present on the spot.

For several minutes, the crane kept pulling the bucket out with the rescuers and equipment.

Then about 50 minutes later, the boy who held the nation captive for the entire weekend, came out wrapped in a white blanket and safe arms of an Army jawan.

His father Ram Chandar, a casual labourer, and his mother had prayed relentlessly. Now with the boy's rescue, the painful wait is finally over.

"I am very happy that my son has come out safely. I thank the people of India who have prayed for his safety," said Prince's mother.

Nerve racking

It was a nerve racking Sunday with CCTV footage showing Prince alive. That was the best news on the morning of his sixth birthday.

Cramped for space and fighting for air to breath, the only interaction Prince had with the outside world was a small basket of biscuits and chocolates given to him on Sunday morning.

The only window to see Prince fight his way was his CCTV footage of inside the well. People across the country prayed for the boy's safe rescue.

It was a challenging task for the rescuers. The Army's Engineers began their rescue work from another nearby well.

This was about 10 feet from the borewell in which Prince was entrapped. The rescuers had to dig the old well a bit deeper, and then tunnel through till they reached Prince. But the big danger was the soft soil.

If the rescuers had made a grab for Prince, he could have been buried alive.

Prince's fate got people, complete strangers, praying for him, not just in his village Halderi, but in nearby Kurkukshetra and other parts of India. And those prayers eventually paid off.

Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh for Prince. The Prime Minister has also offered full medical care for the six-year-old.

The Haryana government has also announced Rs 51,000 for rescue team.
