Ex-Moderator | Yoga! Does anyone do yoga?
I'm off to my first yoga class in a few minutes. I'm scared. I heard it's kinda hard. |

I'm actually quite flexible. I did gymnastics when I was a kid for a few years and I was surprised to figure out how much I retained when I started working out. I just have, like, NO upper body strength, so I'm worried about being able to maintain some of the poses. |

I don't do yoga. I think it's a 90s thing and didnt catch on as I guess people thought it was pretentious and possibly still do. Could you enlighten me as to what yoga's point it?

I have done Yoga for years. I have taken a few classes. They all practice different types. I have found over the years which ones I really like and just stick with those poses for my routine if I am not in a class.
I am really missing my Yoga right now since I fractured my leg. Many of my favorite poses I cannot do and it has been weeks- I am having withdrawls... I do not have a lot of upper body strength either but if you are flexible that is more then half the battle. One of my favorite instructors went around the room and asked all of us if we had any injuries or trouble in certain areas. Then she would give each one of us different options to try to help get around our certain limitations. It takes patience- especially for someone who is not flexible but I have always been limber just weak in the upper body like you Carrie and I always did fine. I hope you enjoy.. Next I want to take a Tai Chi once I get my leg healed and can bend it again... [Edited 7/22/06 8:15am]

I have really open hips, so that kinda stuff is easy but the rest of it was really, really hard. I quite enjoyed the balancing stuff. I have a pretty good sense of balance, so that wasn't too bad. But MAN!! I was sweating like CRAZY! I had no idea how intense it would be. |

It's AMAZING how intense it is.

Ex-Moderator | My friend I went with you has been doing it for about 2 years said it takes a good 3 classes to really decide if you like it or not.
I won't lie, it was REALLY hard. This wasn't exactly a beginner's class, though I wasn't the only beginner there. And the instructor was cool. So we'll see. I do really like how I felt after the class. And that's usually my test. lol. |

I think you will be surprised how well you do after a couple classes. I found that some nights during class I could go right into a pose and then other nights I had a hard time with that same pose. Just depends on how you are feeling that day. I love the cool down at the end- just laying there feeling every muscle in your body. I had to go to my class alone- would have been a lot of fun with a friend.

It's so funny that you posted this today. I was just telling a dear friend in Orgnotes that I 'm thinking of taking a yoga or Pilates class of some sort. Just trying to decide which one would be best for me.
He said your thread is a sign. "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"-Dr Seuss

It was a flow yoga class (I forgot the technical name) so instead of holding poses for a looooong time it was lots of poses for shorter periods of time, the poses all flowing together. |
