The AAWL was founded by Amanda Blake, who played Miss Kitty on TV's "Gunsmoke", and other animal lovers who were concerned about the number of stray animals at the local county facilities. For over 30 years, the AAWL has rescued thousands of homeless animals and provided important humane services to animals and people. The AAWL is a private, non-profit animal shelter with our own Board of Directors. All of our funding is through tax-deductible donations. So.....whats ur point? Hmm could it be to offer info on a shelter near where someone lives who may need to know. I think that was my point. That is Dutch, right?? When I was in Germany my colleages would fall out laughing at me because I would use Babelfish to translate something into German. Exactly, thus my comment about viewing pets as "entertainment", here on earth to give unconditional love to us and put up with our crap, and then be treated like worthless garbage when we get "bored" or they aren't meeting our needs anymore.

Yeah, and here's the thing: we take in these wild animals and domesticate them--making them rely on us for food, water, affection, sometimes we declaw them (which leaves them unable to defend themselves against predators) and then when we become bored or annoyed, cast them out thinking "oh, they're wild animals, they'll survive". Maybe they would have before we tamed them, but now they won't. And raccoons and possums are NO JOKE, they'll tear a cat up.

That is like getting tired of a child and just putting it outside hoping it will go away. The animals start to see the owner as their parent... My brother had a Pug. A Pug is definitely NOT a outside dog. They would get tired of him and throw him outside...in this Arizona heat. They are definitely NOT pet people. I now have the Pug because I felt bad for him. Tiko is now happy, healthy, not shedding, and his coat is silky again. I have told him off on many occasions about the dog, and he is my brother. I am aout to take in another cat (I have one already) because the owner said that she is about to throw it outside to become coyote meal. That is just cruel... The woman offered to repay my parents for the vet bill when she found out, and acted soooo surprised that leaving a cat outdoors for 3 weeks would cause so many medical problems (I forgot to add in the original post that the cat also had a bad upper respiratory infection), but my parents told her "nevermind" because they don't want their neighborly relationship to suffer. At least she had the awareness to seem a bit embarrassed, and promised my parents that she's a better mom to her kids than to her cats.

To me a pet is a friend and family member. as they are to most ADULTS....what happens is some parents get their too young children pets....a live action toy if u will....and when the puppy/kitten/chick/"insert baby animal here" stops being cute and cuddly and actually requires attention and care, the kid loses interest, and a family that really didn't want a pet to begin with is, for all intents, stuck with one....that is how u end up with situations like the one that kicked off the thread.... ...some of us are having some fun with the topic, but I'm certain that no one espouses animal abuse... Yeah, I agree about questioning the motives of adults buying pets for their kids. It seems like a symptom of newer parenting techniques, especially of working parents who may feel guilty and want to give their kids whatever they want, without thinking of consequences. A pet is not a videogame or Barbie, a disposable commodity to toss out when the newer model comes along. What it takes to care for a pet can be a great life lesson to teach a child, and allowing a kid to treat it carelessly is not doing any favors for your kid--you don't want to teach a child that if something gets hard or tough in life, they can just move along.
