Bad Pet Owners

My parents have a situation where a "stray" cat started hanging at their place. It seemed obvious that the cat was an owned, indoor cat, as ALL FOUR paws were declawed. So, who in their right mind would let a completely defenseless cat roam outdoors? They figured someone in the neighborhood had a cat who accidentally got out. Anyway, my parents already have 2 cats who wouldn't take kindly to another addition, so they fed the stray cat outdoors, gave it lots of lovey-dovey petting, let it inside the garage at night, put up flyers in the neighborhood and ads in papers. It had been emaciated and had ear mites, and when they felt some "lumps", my parents broke down and took him to the vet, where it was discovered that he had a hernia, worms and ear mites. It cost about $200, all together.

The other day, the 12 yr old next door neighbor boy came to the door and claimed the cat, saying they'd been out of town on vacation and before they'd left, the cat had gotten out. My parents called the neighbor to let her know that they had medicine for the cat and that they'd bring it over. When they spoke, the woman stated that her sons had "gotten tired of the cats" (they have 2) and that when the cat had "escaped" before vacation and not come home, she had hoped that he'd just "gone off into the woods to die". Oh, and she'd just love it if my mom could continue to try to find a home for both cats.

This sort of behavior truly makes me feel sick to my stomach. Some folks seem to view animals as their "entertainment", and if the pet doesn't perform to standards, or perhaps becomes a bit difficult to deal with, suddenly they deserve to be abandoned or left to die? WTF?!

people don't realize that pets are similar to raising kids, you have to be responsible, they just didn't care because they don't consider animals as important as humans. if you don't want the responsibility don't get them. disbelief

And, pets give so much love in return. It's so sad.

It burns me up to read or hear stories like that one. When you have a pet it is another memeber of the household. To say that you "got tired" of having the pet and let it out hoping it would die is cruel. Your parents are beautiful souls to take care of the cat like they did.

That is like getting tired of a child and just putting it outside hoping it will go away. The animals start to see the owner as their parent...

My brother had a Pug. A Pug is definitely NOT a outside dog. They would get tired of him and throw him outside...in this Arizona heat. They are definitely NOT pet people. I now have the Pug because I felt bad for him. Tiko is now happy, healthy, not shedding, and his coat is silky again. I have told him off on many occasions about the dog, and he is my brother. I am aout to take in another cat (I have one already) because the owner said that she is about to throw it outside to become coyote meal. That is just cruel...

Well...

My father had a pet chicken. Took care of it from chick to chicken. He considered it his pet. he went to school one day and came home to a fried chicken dinner. He didn't realize that he had eaten his "pet" for dinner. My father was so upset over this he didn't eat chicken for years.

Be it cow, chicken, cat , dog, lizard, whatever...if you come to love the critter then it is special.

I truly don't know what it is that people think when they get a pet.

To me a pet is a friend and family member.

as they are to most ADULTS....what happens is some parents get their too young children pets....a live action toy if u will....and when the puppy/kitten/chick/"insert baby animal here" stops being cute and cuddly and actually requires attention and care, the kid loses interest, and a family that really didn't want a pet to begin with is, for all intents, stuck with one....that is how u end up with situations like the one that kicked off the thread....

...some of us are having some fun with the topic, but I'm certain that no one espouses animal abuse... chill pill

You see? I know this isn't the reality. My mother hates animals, and my dad could live without them. Yet, I formed bonds with the animals I had know/had back then in those days of family. So I turly think its more nature then nuiture.

Hence, the use of the word "some"....not all....I have a 5 year old neice who was the basis for my post....just didn't wanna call her out like that.....in her case, her parents were ambivalent to pet ownership...but wanted to make their child happy....but once her "interest" in not one but two dogs waned, off to the pound for one and the other is now living at my house....not h8n just st8n...I have a cat to go along with the dog, but they thrive here because they are wanted and loved....

We have this famous christmas song about a boy with a rabbit, he had the same experience with his rabbit as your dad with the chicken.
His parents tell him not to worry if he can't find his rabbit, not to go into the shed and when he's a sweet boy and plays and he will get something yummy later.

At the end of the song, the second day of chrismas, his mom wakes up, dads bed is empty. The boy tells her not to enter the shed and to be sweet and go and play..... evillol

For the ones that can translate mr.green
Flappie

Mijn konijnenhok was leeg

Vaders bed was leeg

No I didn't. I know that Arizona has the microchipping for pets. My cat was microchipped...but it was because of Army regulations. I live on post and it is like Wild Kingdom out here...I took in the Pug because my 5 year old niece no longer found him cute. My brother and sister in law are really not pet people....
See Renegade's post above (he is talking about my brother and my niece)...they bought not one but two dogs. Both ended up outside and both were attacked or stalked at one point by coyotes that live on this post. If you leave the pet outside it will never make it to a shelter. That is unfortunate...

It is good that there are people that car when they see strays and try to help them instead of being cruel to them...

The Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL), the largest and oldest "no-kill" shelter in Arizona, opened in 1971. The AAWL was founded by Amanda Blake, who played Miss Kitty on TV's "Gunsmoke", and other animal lovers who were concerned about the number of stray animals at the local county facilities. For over 30 years, the AAWL has rescued thousands of homeless animals and provided important humane services to animals and people. The AAWL is a private, non-profit animal shelter with our own Board of Directors. All of our funding is through tax-deductible donations.

The boy tells her not to enter the shed and to be sweet and go and play..... evillol

Flappie

Mijn konijnenhok was leeg

Vaders bed was leeg

My father really was broken up about that. My Grandmother told me that he told her how good the chicken was and he screamed when he found out that he was eating his buddy.

They were very poor and the had chickens for eggs and for dinner. My father got attached to this one bird and the rest is history. It was either save "Chicken" (my father had NO imagination with names) or feed 11 people. They opted to have the chicken...
Trust me he is over that now...the man is in his sixties and hasn't turned down a two piece from Popeye's lately. smile
