Oprah...YAY or NAY

I just don't get all the hate people have for her. With her weight, with her love life, with her show...etc. And it seems as though there is a new batch of O haters. Maybe it's that I don't catch her show, so I don't get it. But I have always thought of her as an American Icon of sorts. When all is said and done she has done a lot for people in general. Maybe not the greatest talk show host, but she isn't evil like she's made out to be.

Oprah..love her or hate her?

both.

YAY: she's done a lot of good for people's lives, on individual levels, on community levels, on lots of levels. she's addressed a lot of practical issues and has actively made people's lives better. obviously, YAY FOR THAT.

NAY: girlfriend got no clue about the arts or modern popular culture, and she needs to keep her nose out of things and quit trying to judge things she obviously doesn't understand. i'm still pissed about the way she did james frey. i know he's not exactly an innocent lamb in the matter, but he didn't deserve the witch trial she gave him, and it's set a new - LOUSY - precedent in the publishing industry, where authors are now having their work scrutinized into the ground. first person writers who incorporate autobiography into their fiction have gone on the cultural endangered species list, at best needing to have their work prefaced and footnoted so they don't get a spanky from talk show hosts who can't grasp the concept of creative license. THANKS OPRAH. mad

ohhhhh...I think she did the right thing about james frey as far as her own saving her own booty. She can't be solely responsible for the fall out.

There are days when I really love her...like with the whole Legend's Ball idea. That was wonderful. I think she's finally understanding her purpose as far as her giving and community work.

Then there are days when I'm like this woman needs to get laid. confused

she could have defended his choices as a writer and helped EDUCATE her BOOK CLUB about certain devices memoirists use. he wrote a strong book that could help a lot of people, and i feel like she pissed all over it with her lazy, ratings-grabbing display of moral outrage.

I got the feeling Oprah did more for him that just the book club choice and this is why she was so pissy.

I also don't think he was using "certain devices memiorists use". I think just flat out lied and got caught.

I do understand your point that she could have used this to educate her audience but...I do feel her.

i've never had anyone explain to me what frey did that was so horrible that it deserved such public humiliation. people fudge facts in autobiographical literature all the time. it's not all supposed to be hardline historical biography. ah well - i think it made even more people interested in his books, so in the long run, whatevs.

Oprah: YAY biggrin
The Oprah crowd: confused

She dissapointed me a little when she "attacked" James Frey on her show though.

Whatever. I doubt you'll see anything like that on this board anyways. I think many dislike her for OTHER reasons.

I give her a YAY as well. SHe's done a lot for women, african americans, gays etc. SHe seems to be a very positive person trying to do positive things for just about everyone. SHe does misstep every so often and perhaps her fame and money has shielded her from what she thinks the world at large is about. But considering she came from almost nothing, she's an accomplishment in herself.

I really think her intentions are genuine...and always have been even if misguided a bit. Her heart is always in her decision I think.

Don't know the woman personally, but for me, its a huge NAY to her show....she has shed light on many topics that other shows wouldn't touch (socially speaking, not in the "I married my cousin...twice kinda way)....she tends to come off really fake....she gets props for her "tears on command" and her condescending concerned facial expressions...and she would do a weeks worth of shows on her greatness if she could.....Oprah cares, but she cares more about herself and her achievements....if u have to constantly remind people of ur greatness....of ur philanthropy....then IMHO that means the shit ain't from the heart....
