So after a lot of consideration I've decided I want to be a construction worker!
I've been trying to figure out what exactly I wanna do when I go back to work for a while now. I was gonna go to nite school. I maybe wanted to be a teacher. But I really think construction work would be cool. So a really good friend of mine works for like THEE construction co. around here and HE says that when chics apply they just throw them in an office job, or let them spackle or something. But I was like well, I really wanna wear a hard hat and like operate the jack hammer or install windows or pour concrete or something OUTSIDE. Plus he said U don't need a hard hat for spackling. And he was like, they won't hire U for a job like that! Here's my question.....isn't that illegal or something. Like descrimination or something???? Oh and plus, I think they get laid of in the winter?????

They have to let you do work that you're qualified to do. Maybe you want to get your foot in the door and then go for the position you want. You need a chance to prove you can do the work.
Yes, there's laws against sexual harrassment but all new workers get harrassed and that goes double for women. You have to have a thick skin. "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"-Dr Seuss

That's too bad if it's true. Women should be doing everything men do. Especially....Nevermind.

Ex-Moderator | I don't know if there's something like it near you, but in Mpls there's a non-profit organization that helps women get certified and land jobs in fields that aren't traditionally held by women, like construction, carpentry, stuff like that. It's an awesome organization that started in the 70's to help newly divorced/emancipated women who had never entered the workforce find jobs. They've evolved into offering stuf like the above mentioned as well as career development, life coaching and classes in starting your own business, etc. Look for something like that in your area. |
