Star Trek: The Animated Series

07.17.2006
Animated Series on DVD Announced!

CBS DVD and Paramount Home Entertainment today announce the DVD release date of the highly anticipated Animated Series. Formerly known as The Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, the four-disc set will hit stores on November 21, 2006.

The title now shortened to Star Trek: The Animated Series, the set will include all 22 episodes of the classic Roddenberry show, which originally aired on Saturday mornings in 1973-74. A final frontier of sorts, the Animated Series is the last of the Trek catalog to make it to DVD.

Creator Gene Roddenberry's animated version of Star Trek features the voices of nearly the entire cast of the original live-action series, including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols and Majel Barrett, as they embark on the further adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Comprised of 22 episodes, the four-disc set includes the Peabody award-winning episode "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth,” Walter Koenig's "The Infinite Vulcan,” which was the first episode ever written by a Star Trek cast member, as well as a number of episodes that serve as sequels to original Star Trek episodes. Many episodes were written by veterans of the original live-action TV series, such as D.C. Fontana and David Gerrold, and the show won a daytime Emmy in 1975 for Outstanding Children's Series.

Confirmed special features for the Animated Series include:

* "Drawn to the Final Frontier - The Making of Star Trek: The Animated Series"
* "What's the Star Trek Connection?"
* Photo Gallery
* Show History
* Wallpaper
* AIM Icons
* Text Commentaries by Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda ("Yesteryear," "The Eye of the Beholder," "The Counter-Clock Incident")

The DVD set will be presented in its original full screen with Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround, English Mono and Spanish Mono and will be available to own for a suggested retail price of $62.99.

It was the good ol' Filmation people. At least they had some of the best animators back at that time outside of Disney. Filmation cartoons were always my favorites on Saturday mornings. biggrin

I don't remember which studio made them but I do remember watching them when they originally came out (yeah, I'm that old).

I also do have them all on VHS. Not sure if I'm going to upgrade to DVD.

YES! I also used to watch The New Adventures Of Gilligan (1974 ABC), The New Adventures of Batman (1977 CBS & NBC), Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle (1976 CBS), Gilligan's Planet (1982 CBS) and would occasionally watch He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983–1985 Synd).

Isn't that a bizarre mix? lol

Man I love this! I remember sitting with my dad watching Star Trek. That was the only time he would let me stay up late with him! He thought the show had too much sex in it! lol Captain Kirk was the man! If it had a hole, he was on it!

Jason (the hubby) is sooooo excited for this. We have them all on VHS, but of course he *has to have them* on DVD especially with the extras smile

Of course I was hoping the original SRP of $35 that they had on the TVShowsonDVD site would hav held up.

Sooooo...you are coming to this years installation of the OrgInvasion RIGHT?!?! I think Jason is making the trip with me.

Here's a complete list of Filmation series. I forgot they did Archie. Man, I used to love me some Archie back in the late 60s. A whole hour of Archie & Jughead. All the kids on my block were singing "Sugar, Sugar", and we were in the projects!

Sadly, they don't make cartoons like they used too. But thanks to DVD, we can show today's generation what Saturday mornings were like for us.

I truly hope I'm there. Three strikes and I'm out, right? lol

I have some of the animated episodes on videotape. The local Hollywood Video had a few of them in stock and.... wink

I'm a bit embarassed at how excited I am by this. I've seen all the original ones so many times, and this is like a whole new season I've never seen.

Are the sound effects the same?

If I remember correctly, yeah. It's been a while since I've watched them, though.
