Isn't there some organization that you can phone to have your name taken off the list?

There's a "Do Not Call" list that you can have your name and number on that is supposed to stop telemarketers from calling your number. I had mine put on it when it first came out but they still call. I've noticed that since the list, there have been more telemarketer calls that are recorded messages.

telemarketing was my first "real" job... (besides babysitting, etc) i worked there for a year and a half. probably the worst kind of telemarketing, IMO. i was selling credit cards. but i was able to seperate myself from the job. i knew when they were yelling at me that it wasn't me they hated and were annoyed at. it was "the telemarketer". i was just trying to make some money. now, if i get a call i just say "no thank you" and hang up.

hug but i understand how frustrating it can be sammi.

Actually, to tell the truth, I was a telemarker for a few months myself back in 1987 for a carpet cleaning company. lol However, times were different back then and there weren't constant telemarketers calling all the time from numerous companies. Also, when someone told me "no", I didn't try to convince them into it or try to sell them anything else.

For years, I had the same "I've been there myself" attitude and treated them nicely when they called until it got to the point that they would not take no for an answer. I would be nice and tell them a lie like "I'm broke" or something to that effect. For every excuse I would give them, they would come up with a solution such as "you can pay in monthly installments" or whatever they could come up with to make my nice lie seem like no excuse not to buy their product. They would even try to prove me lying such as saying things like "you said earlier that....". I'm thinking to myself "I'm lying to spare your feelings, not mine". Finally, I gave up trying to be nice and thought to myself "Why should I lie? I don't have to lie and if they won't listen to the word no, then they deserve to get whatever cussing out that I can dish out".

I thought it was illegal to use automated machines to call people. Maybe it's only in the US, or only in certain states, or something like that.

Honestly, when I did have a landline phone, like 95% of the telemarketing calls were for fundraisers the Fraternal Order of Police. I was getting on average, about 7 - 10 calls per week from them. They would not stop calling me until they spoke to me directly. And even then, sometimes they would continue calling back. A month or two later it would start all over again. They would hide their phone numbers, which sucked because many of my friends hide their numbers as well so I didnt know who it was and would either have to answer or possibly miss an important call.

After two years of telling lord knows how many people at that freaking FOP, that I was not interested, you think they would finally give up and take me off their list? No.

My boss told me about an email she got from her boss. It was a "Do Not Call" list for people to sign up for stating that telemarketers are soon going to be able to call people's cell phones and the individual will have to pay for the call.

I have had the exact same ones call me before. I have told some before "Bitch, I recognize your voice and I told you last time not to call this damn number no more".

As far as looking at a caller ID, I'm not going to spend one red cent extra just to keep from speaking to some asshole I don't want to speak to. I finally got sick of them and now I have my answering machine set to pick up on the first ring. My machine picks up each and every call and has for years. I never answer my home phone any more, ever. Everyone I know says "Pick up if you are there" and then I pick up.

Then the telemarketers started calling me at work, which I have no idea how they got that number. I told this one lady "Bitch, this is a place of business what the fuck are you doing calling me up here?" She said "I've been calling your home number and never could reach you because of your answering machine". I said "Bitch, what the fuck do you think the answering machine is for? It's so I never have to speak to someone like you. Bitch, you've reached me now but I'm going to make you wish you hadn't reached me because this conversation is not going to be pleasant bitch". When I got through cussing that bitch out, she NEVER called me back.

You shouldn't get so angry.

I used to cold call people at work to generate business. It definitely takes someone with a thick skin to do that type of job. I would just say thank you and laugh, and on to the next number. You're not really "making a difference" by threatening and cursing people. I understand your frustration, but if you cussed me out like that, I'd still call you, just for the fun of it. It works both ways. Unless you put your number on the Federal AND State registries, that is.

I'm having a worse time lately with creditors...not the ones looking for me, but the ones looking for other people and calling my number! I love these calls, because I get all these threatening messages on my voicemail and it gives me a perfect reason to call them back and rage at them. It's really better than therapy, they should charge me for calling me by mistake.

I get a ton of calls from people calling for whoever had my phone number before I did. About twice a week, I come home and see messages on my machine for that same lady.

I was getting a lot of messages from a secretary at a high school calling to confirm that the lady's daughter was home from school ill that day. Apparently, the girl must have not given the school her new phone number and is skipping school and the school just thinks the mother is unavailable. I was seeing these messages on my machine about once a week. One day I was home and picked up the phone while the secretary was leaving her message. She asked if I was the girl's father and I said yes. She said the girl misses school every Monday. I said "I don't know what to do with that girl. Her little hot ass is probably skipping school with one of those damn boys again. Don't suspend her, take her in the office and whip her little bad ass".

Well when a telemarketer calls person after person unsolicited, all day long when those people did not give the telemarketer their phone number and do not want to be bothered, that is what is going to happen.

Hehheh, my friend George recently moved and I accidentally called his old number. Some lady answered and went bonkers on me complaining that everyones calling her asking for George.

I mentioned it to him a little while later, and he was like "I should call her, and say 'Hi, this is George, were there any messages for me?'" biggrin

I am sorry that this thread rubbed you very much the wrong way... It was not my intention Sammi. ( Nor was I aware that you or anyone else here worked for the telemarketing industry) My reference was to computers either way as I have not bothered to answer a phone in YEARS. Even so, I find the fact that my personal number was handed out for this purpose as an invasion of privacy. We keep a land line simply to keep in touch with our children. It is WRONG that I have to wade through my own answering machine to reach my kids because the telemarketers harass them to take numbers and the like for mommie. ( Now they have to race to stand by the phone base downstairs to make sure it isn't myself and or their father trying to reach them. In turn I have to wade through and delete some 15 messages to get to one left by my chrildren to share some part of their day whilst at their fathers. THAT IS CRAP! I pay for a service not a headache.
It is a violation of my privacy and an intrusion.

the best thing to do is never give your number out....like when you really don't need to.....say for example getting a Barnes and Noble card.....always pick a number really close to yours but not yours so you can remember it.....and do sign up for the do not call list and tell them to put you on their do not call lists.....all of the above have worked for me

People who are rude to telemarketers should be shot. You think they enjoy calling people up just to be yelled or sworn at? No. Most companies pay their callers very little. It's the kind fo job you get into because you're desperate for work but then can't afford to find a better job because you're just barely making it as is. And top it off, the assholes you're forced to talk to all day think they have the right to treat you like shit because you dared do your job.

I was a telemarketer for a (very) brief period of time. I had to quit -I couldn't handle being screamed at every 10 minutes.

Which means you call, UNSOLICITED, and the person never GAVE you their phone number and most likely do not want you to call them.

I understand you are just trying to make a living, but I value my privacy at home. I do not want to get a call from someone I do not know, who I never GAVE my phone number to, trying to sell me something I do not want or need when I am trying to eat dinner, or helping my children with their homework, or trying to relax.
